New Information about Naughty Dog's standalone multiplayer game for The Last of Us is out, and they are exciting, to say the least.
Naughty Dog recently revealed that The Last of Us standalone multiplayer game promises as much content as any of its previously released single-player games, "and in some ways bigger."
The standalone multiplayer game was supposed to be a part of The Last of Us Part II from the start, but the game eventually grew to something more than just a mode, according to Naughty Dog's announcement.
The Last of Us Standalone Multiplayer New Details
The Last of Us' standalone multiplayer game is said to be just as big as any of Naughty Dog's previously released single-player games and in "some ways bigger," according to the game's writer, Neil Druckmann, per IGN.
Druckmann added that the standalone multiplayer game would have its own story and that the way they would tell it would be unique to the game only.
The standalone multiplayer game would also feature a new cast of characters for players to follow and a location that is new to the series.
Although the game developer didn't share where the game is set, the concept art Druckmann revealed looks like it could be in San Francisco, which could be correct due to the appearance of what appears to be the Golden Gate bridge on the top left part of the concept art's background.
Naughty Dog will also significantly grow its studio to ensure that the standalone multiplayer game and its "massive scope and immersive world," is built in a way that fans have come to expect from The Last of Us and Naughty Dog.
Druckmann didn't give out any more info about the game apart from what has already been covered, but he did promise that he and Naughty Dog as a company would reveal more information in 2023, per Eurogamer.
Hopefully, we will get the standalone multiplayer's definite release date by then.
"We am to make our newest entry into multiplayer inviting to new players while still a thrilling challenge for more of our seasoned fans," Naughty Dog said. "There will be more news to come next year, and we cannot wait to introduce you to the team behind this experience!"
The Last of Us Part II Multiplayer Gone Solo
The Last of Us Part II was originally intended to have a multiplayer component from the get-go, similar to what Naughty Dog did with the series' first game. However, the game developer announced on its official Twitter account that The Last of Us 2's multiplayer mode wouldn't be coming due to its growing "beyond an additional mode that could be included with [The Last of Us 2'] enormous single player campaign."
Kotaku mentioned that data miners were able to find files in The Last of Us 2 that hinted at an online mode inspired by battle royale games like Fortnite and Player Unknowns: Battlegrounds.
Additionally, an 11-second recording of what seems to be The Last of Us Part II's multiplayer mode was leaked on YouTube by someone going by the username Soliduss Gamer.
