BioWare's Dragon Age is officially coming to Netflix this December.
Dragon Age, a franchise of fantasy role-playing video games created by BioWare, is being adapted into an animated series by Netflix.
At its Geeked Week event, Netflix made the announcement that it would be releasing an animated series based on the video game "Dragon Age: Absolution." The series will consist of six episodes and will premiere in December.
Dragon Age in Netflix
The premiere trailer of the new animated series was aired at Netflix's Geeked Week event, showing snippets of the few episodes in the empire of Tevinter. The released trailer of the game promised the beginning of a new saga and the emergence of certain characters to rise as heroes.
It is officially confirmed that the action of the series will take place in Tevinter, the oldest human nation still in existence in Thedas. This nation is overseen by a powerful government that is able to use magic. Tevinter is an empire within the Dragon Age universe.
Tevinter is also rumored to be the setting for the upcoming video game in the Dragon Age series, titled Dragon Age: Dreadwolf, which will be developed by BioWare.
Despite the lack of information regarding exactly when in the timeline of the fantasy franchise Absolution will take place, the series will take fans to the dark magocracy of the Tevinter Imperium.
According to Polygon, the Tevinter Imperium is a rare society ruled by mages in Thedas, the world of Dragon Age, and it is the only society in Thedas where practitioners of magic are heavily controlled and limited by the church.
In addition, the upcoming video game "Dragon Age: Absolution" will feature an ensemble of a diverse set of characters, with a variety of different kinds. The streaming platform stated that fans should prepare to see demons, elves, knights, mages, Qunari, Red Templars, and more surprises along the way.
These castings, as fans can notice, are also inspired by the original Dragon Age lore.
Dragon Age Adaptation
According to Netflix, "Dragon Age: Absolution" is in development in partnership with BioWare. The show is going to be produced along with Red Dog Culture House, which is also known for producing The Witcher: Nightmare of the Wolf. This animated series will also be created in collaboration with Mairghread Scott, a very well-known comic book writer who is also behind popular animated series such as the "Guardians of the Galaxy" and "Robots in Disguise."
As reported by Gizmodo, "Dragon Age: Absolution" will follow the original cast of characters and take fans to the realm of Tevinter. Tevinter is a major location in the game that has largely been left unexplored in the games up to this point. The Dragon Age video game is no stranger to animated adaptations. The game has already experienced several adaptations in the past. A few tie-in direct-to-video films have been made for the franchise around the releases of the games.
Fans of BioWare's Dragon Age can consider this perhaps an advance teaser of what is to come next in the game. A possible prelude, even though no one currently knows how the story and characters of Absolution could possibly connect to the upcoming game, which was recently given the title Dreadwolf and is expected to be released some time in 2023.
In December of 2022, it will become available to stream on Netflix. You can click on the YouTube video below to watch the Dragon Age: Absolution teaser.
