NASA's Perseverance rover has arrived on Mars and discovered some strange and intriguing terrain.
On June 12, NASA's Perseverance rover took this wide image with its mast-mounted camera of the Martian rock.

A rock perched precariously atop a larger slab of gray rock to the left of the picture. However, that is not the only noteworthy element in the image. You can also see a sloping sandy ground, a layered cliff, and a protuberance that resembles a snake's head or a seal with its jaws open.
According to CNET, the rover is currently exploring the Jezero Crater's intriguing river delta region. The rover will collect rock samples, which will hopefully be sent to Earth for study. Scientists are ecstatic about this phase of the trip because it may reveal whether Mars was once home to microbial life.
The striking image piqued the interest of Mars enthusiasts online. "Perhaps the most evocative photo ever taken on Mars," strobiologist r David Grinspoon said in a Tweet.
What Camera Captured This Amazing Photo?
NASA mentioned that Mastcam-Z, a pair of cameras on the Perseverance rover that take color photos and video, three-dimensional stereo views, and has a strong zoom lens, took this photo. They also offer a zoom feature for viewing details of distant subjects.
The Mastcam-Z comprises two identical camera systems installed on the mast that rises above the rover deck. The cameras are placed next to each other and point in the same direction, creating a 3-D vision that is similar to but better than what human eyes can perceive.
What Are the Missions of the Perseverance Rover?
Space.com mentioned that the Perseverance has two main missions: [1] find evidence of past Mars life (assuming any exists), and [2] collect and cache dozens of samples for future return to Earth.
Members of the Perseverance team have claimed that Jezero's ancient delta is the best location for the rover to do such research; indeed, the delta's existence is the primary reason the rover was sent to Jezero.
In a statement, Thomas Zurbuchen, associate administrator of NASA's Science Mission Directorate in Washington, argues that the Jezero Crater river delta is one of the greatest places on Mars to seek for signs of ancient microscopic life, as per our previous report.
NASA announced in April that the Perseverance rover had reached an ancient river delta on Mars as part of its mission.
NASA Is Seeking Public Feedback on Its Proposed Mars Sample Return Mission
NASA announced on April 29 that it is soliciting public feedback on an environmental assessment for its Mars sample return mission.
"The public meetings will include briefings about the status of the National Environmental Policy Act process for the proposed program, as well as its purpose and scientific goals. Meetings will also cover why the Utah Test and Training Range operated by the U.S. Air Force is the proposed landing site for the samples, and what planners are doing to ensure safe and secure return of the samples," NASA statement read.
