Ten years after Dragon's Dogma was released, the cult classic fantasy action role-playing game is finally getting a sequel.

Capcom veteran and Dragon's Dogma game director Hideaki Itsuno confirmed during the 10-year anniversary livestream on Thursday that Capcom is developing Dragon's Dogma II.

Dragon's Dogma art director Daigo Ikeno and environment art lead Kenichi Suzuki joined Itsuno during the stream. The two are also working on the sequel.

'Dragon's Dogma 2' is Already in Full Production

According to Itsuno, Dragon's Dogma II is in full production. He added that he hopes it will be worth the decade-long wait. As of writing, there is no release date yet. The platforms for the sequel was also not announced yet.

Capcom is using internal RE Engine in developing Dragon's Dogma II. It is the "technology that powers the recent Resident Evil remakes, Devil May Cry 5, and next year's Street Fighter 6," according to Polygon report.

In 2012, Dragon's Dogma was released for PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360. Polygon's review of Dragon's Dogmasaid that the game "embraces wild design choices that provide fascinating results, even when they don't necessarily work toward a better experience for the player."

Meanwhile, Kotaku's review stated that the game is "full of potential" but "falls flat." Accordingly, this is attributed to its messy user interface, muddy visuals, and an overwhelming crush of side-quests.

Despite the criticisms, Dragon's Dogma has a strong fan-base. Patrick Klepek revisited the game four years after Kotaku's review and despite the imperfections that he noticed, he praised the combat.

Throughout the years, there are fans that have come around. They eventually praised the game's creature design, and its story. Fans also acknowledged its breadth and depth of class customization.

Capcom Seems Not in a Rush to Release 'Dragon's Dogma 2'

Dragon's Dogma is set in the high fantasy world of Gransys. In the game, the player takes on the role of a human protagonist dubbed the Arisen.

The player will be on a quest to defeat the dragon Grigori, a being said to herald the world's end. Along the way, the player will be uncovering a deeper conspiracy.

An expansion/re-release of the original was released in 2013 by Capcom. It is entitled Dragon's Dogma: Dark Arisen. The game explored a new, highly difficult island dungeon.

In 2017, Dragon's Dogma: Dark Arisen made its way to PlayStation 4 and Xbox One with spruced-up visuals. It made its way to Nintendo Switch in 2019. One year after, an anime adaptation was released by Netflix.
