Apple's First Mixed Reality Headset May Just Feature the M2 Processor

Apple's Mixed Reality headset might be even better than previously thought.

The Cupertino-based tech giant is allegedly adding its upcoming M2 processor to its upcoming mixed reality headset, according to Bloomberg's Mark Gurman, which really drives home the idea of it being a "game-changer" amongst its rivals.

Apple revealed the M2 and its capabilities during its annual Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC) event in early June, per Apple's WWDC highlights page.

Apple Mixed Reality Headset + M2 Processor Facts

Apple is expected by Bloomberg's Mark Gurman to install its upcoming M2 processor to its upcoming mixed reality headset. The company is also said to be providing the headset with 16GB of RAM.

You may remember that the M2 chip featured redesigned central processing units and a memory increase that makes it more capable than its predecessor, the M1, according to CNET. This increase would allegedly provide a hefty boost to the headset's features and capabilities, such as a slightly faster CPU and 35% faster GPU.

Thanks to the faster CPU and GPU response time, the headset is expected to provide significantly better performance when used for gaming.

Gurman's expectations with the headset vastly deviate from the predictions of Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, who said that the headset would feature two processors: one that is comparable to the M1 and an additional lower-end processor dedicated to handling data from the headset's sensors, per MacRumors.

The Verge mentioned in its article that swapping the M1-equivalent processor for the M2 makes sense if Apple was planning to use the M1 as the headset's primary processor.

However, the swap from an M1-equivalent processor to the M2 could lead to a change in the power management unit (PMU) design of the previous high-end processor.

Kuo mentioned that Apple used this PMU design due to the M1-equivalent processor having the same level of computing power as the M1.

Appl's Mixed Reality Headset Release

Interestingly, Apple CEO Tim Cook may have hinted of the headset releasing soon, with him telling China Daily that he "couldn't be more excited about the opportunities" augmented and virtual reality presents. He also told the publication that people should "stay tuned" for them to see what Apple has to offer on that front.

Cook's statement is significant as there are previous hints that the headset could be hitting store shelves soon. Twitter user Parker Ortolani found references to a "realityOS" for Apple's mixed reality headset.

Another hint came from references to realityOS in App Store upload logs, according to verified Twitter user and programmer, Steve Throughton-Smith.

However, Kuo mentioned that Apple might only reveal but not release the headset sometime in January 2023, during an event the company will be holding during that time.

DigiTimes' report on the headset's reveal also coincides with the Apple analyst's findings, with its report mentioning that the headset will be mass-produced in August or September.
