With a new "digital nomad visa," Indonesia is hoping to draw in more remote workers. The proposed visa aims to encourage digital nomads to work from well-known locations like Bali, according to Euro News and The Register.
Digital Nomad Visa
Before the COVID-19 pandemic, the notion was discussed, but it was understandably abandoned as borders closed and there was no chance of any digital nomads arriving, as per The Register.
However, Sandiaga Uno, Indonesia's minister for tourism and the creative economy, stated in recent interviews that the visa was being rethought.
A five-year validity is projected for the proposed digital nomad visa. It will enable remote workers to reside in the nation tax-free as long as their income comes from companies with headquarters outside of Indonesia. Holders of visas would not be required to pay taxes in Indonesia, but rather in the country where they are paid.
What is the benefit to the nation? The money that the nomads will spend on Bali on a day-to-day basis will help the Indonesian economy.
The pandemic severely impacted Bali's tourism industry, which makes up a significant portion of Indonesia's gross domestic product (GDP). Long-term affluent inhabitants could bring years' worth of income to the island's locals by being lured there.
Euro News mentioned that compared to other nations, the five-year visa would end up being the longest one offered to digital nomads.
Meanwhile, the guidelines on how and when to apply for the visa have not yet been made public.
