Blizzard Buys 'Spellbreak' Creator Proletariat to Expand 'World of Warcraft' Staff

Boston-based Proletariat will join Blizzard. Its 100 staff will work on World of Warcraft, including the Dragonflight expansion.

The Proletariat acquisition is Blizzard's biggest in 10 years. In this case, increasing World of Warcraft's staff helps it reach quality and timetable requirements.

Blizzard Entertainment Purchased 'Spellbreak' Creator Proletariat 'World of Warcraft' Staff

To increase the number of employees working on its massively multiplayer online role-playing game World of Warcraft, Blizzard Entertainment purchased Spellbreak developer Proletariat.

Proletariat, a Boston-based company, will join Blizzard as part of the agreement. Its 100 employees will start working on World of Warcraft, including the Dragonflight expansion that will be released later this year.

It will be dusk when Spellbreak, a combat royale game in which witches and wizards throw spells at one another, begins. Yesterday, the business made this news public.

The purchase is the largest one that Blizzard has undertaken in enlarging its studios - at least during the last ten years. The objective in this example is to increase World of Warcraft's workforce in order to help it meet its expansion quality and timeline targets. No financial details of the deal were made public.

In January 2021, Vicarious Visions, a longstanding Activision studio, was incorporated into Blizzard by Activision Blizzard, the latter being the business that owns Blizzard. Vicarious Visions will concentrate on the Diablo series. But considering that Swinging Ape was one of the few acquisitions we can recall from Blizzard, it's hard to say that the company has been very acquisitive.

Instead, before settling with Activision Blizzard in 2008, Blizzard itself was shuffled about quite a time in its early years. Since May, Blizzard and Proletariat have been collaborating.

These last several years, Vicarious Visions has been producing excellent work. With the release of the Crash Bandicoot N. Sane Trilogy in 2017, Vicarious Visions created some of the finest remakes ever after Skylanders (and the whole toys-to-life craze that it helped popularize) failed. Before the release of Crash Bandicoot 4, it was About Time in 2021, that bundle restored the entire Crash brand to relevancy (which Toys for Bob, a partner producer of Skylanders, produced.).

Then, with Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 1+2, the company flexed once more. Millions of dollars have been made off of both remake collections. It was entertaining to guess which beloved series Vicarious Visions would next bring back.

Proletariat's Spellbreak Server will Shut Down Next Year

On the other hand, Proletariat's combat royale game Spellbreak, which focuses on magic and lets players cast spells against one another, will be closing down in 2023.

This week, the developers of the game revealed this development or the conclusion of action on social media. They also wrote a post on Spellbreak's final playable time on the game's website. Although a particular time for the game's servers to shut down has not yet been specified, Proletariat has already said that the game's development has definitely come to an end.

The game was first released in September 2020 for the PlayStation, Xbox, Nintendo Switch, and PC platforms, while it was previously playable via alpha and beta testing dating back to 2018. The team's ambition for the project was described in a blog post regarding the game's future intentions as an 'ambitious' game.

Although users appear to have given the game generally positive ratings, its updates over the previous several months have been, at best intermittent. The website indicates that Patch 4.1 was applied in September 2021, two months after the release of the last patch in July.

The CEO of Proletariat, Seth Sivak, posted a statement on the game's subreddit stating that the company was never able to invest in Spellbreak sustainably.
