EA might not have thought better of that joke.
The popular game publisher recently tweeted a joke that dissed single-player games and those that played them, but the gaming community found it to be in poor taste.
EA eventually retracted its joke but did not apologize for the original tweet, saying "[they] will take the L."
EA Single-Player Game Diss Joke Facts
EA recently tweeted a joke following a popular meme format wherein people showcase a person's bad trait despite them being a great person. In this case, EA said in the joke that people playing single-player games are "a 10" but called their being "10" into question because they play only single-player games.
EA is no stranger to berating single-player games and those who play them. You may remember that EA previously mentioned in 2010, EA Games'-then label president Frank Gibeau mentioned that the company is "very comfortable moving the discussion towards how [EA] make connected gameplay - be it cooperative or multiplayer or online services" as opposed to single-player games that supposedly has 25 hours' worth of content, per Wired.
"I think that [the model of single-player games] is finished," Gibeau added. "Online is where the innovation, and the action, is at."
EA reiterated its position in single-player games when reports came out that it canceled Visceral Games' a single-player game based on the "Star Wars" universe, per VG247.

Blake Jorgensen, EA's executive vice president and chief financial officer, described the game as something that was aiming to do big and revolutionary. However, it "continued to look like a much more linear game [which] people don't like as much today as they did five or ten years ago."
Nevertheless, the company's position on the model could be considered controversial and even hypocritical to an extent.
EA has published single-player games that performed well despite their nature, with Star Wars Jedi Fallen Order selling two to four million copies more than the company's expected amount, per Eddie Makuch.
The company is also currently developing a few single-player games, with the upcoming Dragon Age: Dreadwolf, Star Wars Jedi Survivor, and the remake of the original Dead Space video game being the most prominent ones on the list.
The Gaming Community's Reaction
The reaction to EA's tone-deaf joke quickly spread online and has garnered a massive amount of negative quote tweets and replies. It even received negative comments from its developers, former and otherwise.
A prime example of this is the tweet from Zach Mumbach, the former producer of the now-shuttered Visceral Games.
"This is the company that shut down my studio and laid off ~100 great developers because we were making a single player game," Mumbach said. "Also, if you break game rating scores down to a 10 point scale most EA games are a solid 6 or 7. Not because the developers are bad but because EA the corporation forces them to rush games out. EA corporate leadership wouldn't know what a "10" looks like in terms of video games."
Respawn Entertainment's Vince Zampella also joined in the fun, wherein he replied with a facepalm emoji to EA's joke.
EA eventually retracted the tweet, saying that the "roast" they received was well deserved and that they would "take the L" uncontested.
