Amazon is now offering a new way to deliver your packages.
As Amazon takes its climate goals seriously, it has started delivering packages using cargo e-bike and on foot in the UK. In central London, the company has opened a micromobility hub.
According to Amazon, "the walkers and e-bikes will make more than a million deliveries a year from the hub in Hackney," as per Engadget report. The company claims that those trips will take over the thousands of van deliveries.
Amazon Also Utilizes Cargo E-Bikes in Other Parts of the World
To begin the operation, "the e-bikes and on-foot couriers will be in service across more than a tenth of the city's ultra low emission zone (ULEZ)," according to Engadget.
Since e-bikes and fully electric vehicles are exempted from the London Congestion Charge and ULEZ fees, there will be no payment required from Amazon and its delivery partners.
In the coming months, Amazon plans to establish more e-cargo delivery hubs in the UK. The company has rolled out more than 1,000 electric delivery vans on the road.
Earlier this year, the company added five new fully electric Heavy Goods Vehicles. According to Amazon, "these 37-tonne vehicles are among the first in the UK, the first in Amazon's fleet, and replace traditional diesel trucks."
The cargo e-bikes in the UK isn't the first time Amazon has used such vehicles. According to Euronews, in five cities in France and seven metropolitan areas in Germany, cargo e-bikes are being used for deliveries.
In Italy and Spain, the company is using electric scooters. Moreover, in Paris, Amazon was fulfilling two-thirds of deliveries with e-bikes, on-foot couriers and electric vans as of last November.
The Shipment Zero project of Amazon is after delivering 50 percent of packages with net-zero carbon emissions by 2030. As part of its Climate Pledge, by 2040, the company expects to become net-zero carbon.

Amazon Plans to Run its Operations Entirely on Renewable Energy
In addition to the cargo e-bikes and on foot couriers, Amazon also plans to run its operation entirely on renewable energy.
In fact, the company has announced that by the end of the year, it plans to have more than 30,000 new modular solar panels installed on its facilities in Manchester, Coalville, Haydock, Bristol and Milton Keynes.
Amazon has confirmed 18 on-site solar projects in the UK. By 2024, it plans to more than double the number of projects.
"Amazon is driving towards a global net-zero carbon future. One way we're doing that is through the transformation of our transportation networks. Our new e-cargo bikes, walkers and growing electric vehicle delivery fleet will help us make more zero emission customer deliveries than ever before across London and the UK in the coming months," said John Boumphrey, UK Country Manager, Amazon.
Moreover, Boumphrey added: "Doubling the number of on-site solar projects at our facilities across the UK further demonstrates our ambition to power our operations with 100% renewable energy by 2025 and represents an important step on our journey to be net-zero carbon by 2040."
