Samsung has officially brought the old-school flip phone to the Android smartphone world. Like flip phones, the Hennessy includes two displays, quad-core processor and more.
Samsung has never been shy about attacking the smartphone market from any way possible. The company makes smartphones that offer a certain amout of appeal to users. The Galaxy Note is the S-Pen packing phablet. The Galaxy S4 is the flagship smartphone with the specs to match. Its Galaxy Mega series caters to users who find a 6.3-inch display to be the perfect sized smartphone, while the Mini series brings the look and features of the flagship smartphone into a smaller package. Samsung is hoping its latest smartphone will appeal to a new market - people who just can't get rid of a flip phone.
Samsung has officially announced the Hennessy, which will bring Android to a flip phone package. It keeps what people love most about flip phones intact, complete with physical dial pad. The Hennessy features dual 3.3-inch touchscreen displays with a resolution of 320 x 480 and a pixel density of 175 pixels per inch (ppi). The handset runs Android 4.1 Jelly Bean with Samsung TouchWiz and is powered by a 1.2GHz quad-core processor. It will include 1GB of RAM and pack a 5-megapixel rear camera with LED flash. Its wireless capabilities include Wi-Fi 802.11 a/b/c/n, Bluetooth 4.0, AND GPS. It will also pack 16GB of internal storage, a removable 1,500 mAh battery and include a microSD expansion slot that will support up to 64GB microSD cards. The handset will also feature dual-SIM support.
Samsung announced the Hennessy would be released initially in China. The company did not announce what other countries will get its flip phone smartphone. Samsung might want to see how well consumers respond to the Hennessy flip phone before it tries to launch the device in other regions. It will certainly be interesting to see if the design of a flip phone could wean current di hard flip phone users to a smartphone and current smartphone owners to a flip phone smartphone.
