ZTE is now selling its unlocked ZTE Open Firefox OS smartphone in the U.S. and the UK. You can purchase the smartphone from ZTE's eBay store.
Mozilla is the latest company to launch its own mobile operating system. Firefox OS will join the likes of iOS, Android, Windows Phone, and BlackBerry as the latest smartphone operating system to hit the market. If you're looking to try out a new smartphone and OS, the ZTE Open is now available unlocked for $79.99 in the U.S. and the UK.
In case you're not familiar with Firefox OS, its features and apps, here's a brief description from ZTE explaining its philosophy.
"Firefox OS smartphones are the first devices powered completely by Web technologies. It includes all the things people expect from a smartphone - calls, messaging, email, camera - and those that they want, such as built-in social integration with Facebook and Twitter, location-based services like Nokia HERE maps which include local transit and traffic information, much-loved features like the Firefox Web browser, the Firefox Marketplace and much more. So you can take control of your life online and you can use the Awesome Bar (URL Bar) to get where you want to go quickly."
Since Firefox OS can only be successful if people actually use it, ZTE has decided to sell the ZTE Open unlocked and at a relatively low price of admission of $79.99. The company is hoping that this price point will not only attract users to the ZTE Open and Firefox OS, but will also spark the interest of developers to support and create new applications for the operating system.
The ZTE Open features a 3.5-inch 480 x 320 touchscreen, 512MB of storage, and is powered by a 1.0 GHz processor. It also includes 256 MB of RAM, a 3.2-megapixel camera, 3G radio, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth 2.1, A-GPS, and a microSD expansion slot. The ZTE Open will be able to run on AT&T and T-Mobile's networks.
Interested customers in the U.S. and the UK can now purchase the unlocked ZTE Open via ZTE's eBay store for $79.99.
