An “Eragon” TV Show for Disney+ Is in the Works — Here’s What You Need To Know

Disney Plus may soon be introducing us to a new fantasy TV show with magic and dragons.

Disney is reportedly developing a live-action TV series based on young adult writer Christopher Paolini's Inheritance Cycle, specifically in its first book, "Eragon," per Variety.

The book was previously adapted into a live-action movie in 2006 in a movie bearing the same name with mixed to negative reviews, per IMDb and Rotten Tomatoes, despite its success at the box office.

'Eragon' Live-Action Disney Plus TV Show Details

Variety's sources claim that Disney Plus' TV show based on Paolini's Inheritance Cycle would cover all four of its books, starting with the first one, "Eragon."

They also mentioned that Paolini would serve as the series' co-writer, with Bert Salke being its executive producer under Co-Lab 21, while 20th Century Fox acts as the series' producer.

This TV series isn't the first time 20th Century Fox and Paolini came together for the Inheritance Cycle. Both parties were involved in distributing the ill-fated live-action 2006 "Eragon" film, wherein the latter party acted as the film's distributor.

Although representatives for Disney and Paolini did not immediately respond to Variety's requests for comment, CNET reported that the Inheritance Cycle's author is excited about the TV series, as evidenced by his tweet in a reply to an inquiry about his feelings about the Disney Plus TV series.

"So, All I can say at the moment is... thank you," Paolini said in another tweet. "Thank you to everyone who has read the books, supported the tweetstorms, and participated in this fandom. None of this would have happened without you Alagaësians."

'Eragon' And The Inheritance Cycle - A Quick Summary

The story of "Eragon" and the Inheritance Cycle takes place in the medieval fantasy world of Alagaësia, where magic, dragons, and dragon riders exist.

The story focuses on the life and adventures of the titular character, Eragon, an orphaned farm boy whose life was changed forever when a dragon egg suddenly appeared in front of him during his regular hunting runs. This egg would soon hatch, revealing a dragon to Eragon. Once he touches the infant dragon with his hand, he is thrust into a world of magic and politics that will shape him into one of the legendary dragon riders of old despite his young age.

Paolini mentioned that he wrote "Eragon" in 2002 when he was 15 years old, per the Washington Post. Paolini would later have the book published in 2003 thanks to the urgings of his parents, who were "astonished by the quality and unique voice of his work," per the Inheriwiki.

The book was then published through the family's publishing company, Paolini International.

"Eragon" would soon be followed by three sequels, which are named "Eldest," "Brisingr," and "Inheritance."

The first book was eventually adapted into a live-action film in 2006 but was panned due to negative reviews, per IGN. Despite the movie's critical reception, many critics praised some of the actors' work in the film, such as Jeremy Irons, per a separate Inheriwiki page.

It is not known if Disney would hire some of the film's actors to have them reprise their roles again.
