Xcode 14 Beta Hints Always-On Display on Apple’s iPhone 14 Pro

The iOS 16 will have new wallpapers, which are ready for new always-on display. This has been reported by 9to5Mac last week saying that this will be the new key feature of the upcoming iPhone 14 Pro.

That rumor was further reinforced as Xcode 14 beta hinted that iPhone 14 Pro models will indeed have always-on display technology, which is similar to Apple Watch, according to MacRumors.

Rumored Lock Screen Interface of Always-On Display

According to 9to5Mac, they were able to confirm that Xcode 14 beta 4 has, in fact, partial support for the new always-on mode of iPhone 14.

In a tweet, MacRumors contributor Steve Moser noted that the Xcode 14 beta features an interesting Lock Screen interface.

Based on the tweet, when the screen wakes, the beta removes detail from an on-screen widget.

An animation that suggests that the ‌iPhone 14 Pro‌ models could eliminate intricate details from widgets and other Lock Screen content. This happened during the time that the iPhone is locked, or when the always-on display is active.

In addition, iOS developer @rhogelleim also noticed signs of a black and white version of a widget. This is usually in color in the Xcode 14 beta. It is speculated that this could be connected to the always-on display mode.

Moreover, it can be noticed that the most recent iOS 16 beta also teases "Sleep" state for wallpapers. This suggests more information how the always-on display would possibly work.

The "Sleep" versions of wallpapers are "darker, with fading out bright colors," according to MacRumors. This could be due to preservation of battery life when always-on display is in use.

Some details about the new feature of the iPhone 14 remains to be unclear. It is still unknown how the system will behave with notifications.

Always-On Display Will be Available to iPhone 14 Pro and Pro Max models Only

The always-on technology works by allowing the system to show some information on the screen. This functionality consumes very little battery power.

It can be noted that in Apple Watch models, the always-on display allows the device to show the watch face. This happens even when the user is not interacting with the watch.

With Apple Watch, the technology lessens the screen brightness. Some visual elements are also hidden to save battery life.

It is rumored that the always-on display functionality will be limited to the ‌iPhone 14 Pro‌ and ‌iPhone 14 Pro‌ Max since these devices will have the required display technology.

Rumors say that the ‌iPhone 14 Pro‌ and Pro Max will have refresh rates varying from 1Hz to 120Hz, which is an enhancement over the 10Hz to 120Hz refresh rates in iPhone 13 Pro devices.

According to McRumors, with 1Hz refresh rate, time, widgets, and even notifications will be visible in the ‌iPhone‌ while it is in a sleep state.

Aside from the always-on display, Apple's ‌iPhone 14 Pro‌ and Pro Max models are also rumored to have a no-notch design.

The models will instead utilize pill-shaped and hole-punch cutouts for Face ID and camera hardware. It will have an improved rear camera, and A16 chips.
