7-Eleven Stores in Denmark Close Down Following Cyberattack

An ongoing cyberattack currently happening in Denmark is affecting one of the most popular convenience stores in the country.

7-Eleven stores in Denmark have recently shut down following a cyberattack disrupting their payment and checkout systems, per Bleeping Computer.

7-Eleven has yet to disclose the details of the attack and is working on the issue already, according to Security Week.

7-Eleven Cyberattack Details

7-Eleven mentioned in its official Twitter account that it has been exposed to a cyberattack on August 8, preventing its stores to use checkouts and/or receiving payment.

To be specific, the cyberattack is affecting 7-Eleven's Danish stores by having their cash registers malfunction all of a sudden, per Danish publication The Local.

7-Eleven Denmark CEO Jesper Ostergaard told Danish broadcaster DR that the malfunction has never happened before and that it is working hard to find out what exactly happened.

Due to the cyberattack's effects, the company has decided to keep its stores closed until further notice, with it hoping that it can open its stores soon.

Unfortunately, Ostergaard didn't mention when the stores will be open again as the company has no timescale.

"We will decide later what to do next, Ostergaard said to DR.

A now-deleted Reddit post has confirmed Ostergarrd's statement. the ongoing cyberattack and its resulting malfunction.

The employee, who is working at a store in Stroget, revealed in their Reddit post that all of the country's 176 7-Eleven stores run with the same system.

However, due to the cyberattack attacking the system, their checkout system does not work, forcing them to close their store.

7-Eleven did not confirm the involvement of ransomware, though shutting down the system is a common measure to prevent the spread of one, according to Techzine.

Bleeping Computer has reached out to 7-Eleven for more details to learn more about the attack, but was told that the company has nothing further to share outside of their original statement.

Not The Only One

Cyberattacks have become increasingly frequent over the past few days, with more than 100 Belgian and Dutch dental practices being forced to close their doors following a ransomware cyberattack on Colusseum Dental Benelux, according to the company's official website.

Unfortunately, the dentist company acquiesced to the cybercriminals behind the attack, with the company paying the criminals the required ransom in the pursuit of customer convenience.

"Only in this way were we able to minimize the risk for all those involved in shuch a short period of time and to restore practice relatively quickly," the company said in a statement.

Colosseum Dental Benelux has already reported the attack to the Dutch Data Protection Authority as required by law.

The rise of ransomware attacks in 2022 can be traced back to the LAPSUS$ attacks that took on the global tech industry earlier in 2022, affecting companies such as Ubisoft, NVIDIA, and even T-Mobile.
