Breaking Bad Creator Shares Why GTA-Inspired Game Never Happened as MultiVersus Hints at Walter White Addition

Vince Gilligan shared his thoughts on a vision he had for a GTA-themed "Breaking Bad" game.

Emmy Award-winning writer and producer Vince Gilligan recently opened up about his dreams for a "Breaking Bad" video game modeled after the popular action-adventure game Grand Theft Auto or GTA and why it never transpired. In a recent episode of the "Inside The Gilliverse" podcast, the 55 year old "Breaking Bad" creator admitted that he tried to get a video game made out of the award-winning series but the plans had fallen through.

According to Kotaku, Gilligan shared that it was "guys [who are] off running Apple now...who said yes originally" to a "Breaking Bad" video game. The series creator appeared to suggest that at some point, his team had contacted Rockstar Games, which develops GTA for a "Breaking Bad" video game, however, it never came to fruition.

Why No Actual 'Breaking Bad' Video Games Were Made

Gilligan admitted that there had been "quite a few attempts at video games," with some of them actually making it to the market. The "Breaking Bad" series creator said that they attempted to create a VR experience using the Sony PlayStation VR headset and also created a mobile game called Breaking Bad: Criminal Elements.

Gilligan acknowledged that Breaking Bad: Criminal Elements was a successful adaptation of the award-winning franchise but that he yearned for a much more expansive adaptation that was inspired by GTA. He did admit, however, that making a "Breaking Bad" video game was simply too difficult to do, ScreenRant reported.

"Making a video game is damned hard, from what little I learned through this process," Gilligan remarked. "It literally takes years and years and millions of dollars, especially when you are trying to break new ground with VR and whatnot. Never quite came to fruition. It's a shame."

MultiVersus Director Might Be Hinting at Walter White Addition

While "Breaking Bad" fans might be disappointed to know that an actual video game is not in the future of the franchise, they still might see one of their favorite characters in another game. MultiVersus is a free-to-play crossover fighting game from Player First Games and published by Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment.

MultiVersus is known for its playable platform fighters, which features characters from a wide array of Warner Bros. Discovery-owned franchises, including "Adventure Time," "Rick and Morty," "Looney Tunes, "Tom & Jerry," "Steven Universe," and even "Game of Thrones." "Breaking Bad"'s very own Walter White, who is one of the most demanded additions to MultiVersus, might make his way to the game soon.

MultiVersus is a competitor to Super Smash Bros., which earned its success by featuring a lot of crossovers. Now, MultiVersus players are calling for the game to add more characters, such as Walter White of "Breaking Bad." It appears that game director Tony Huynh is heeding that call."

According to GameRant, fans of Walter White are so dedicated that they established a Twitter account called "Walter White for MultiVersus." This account recently shared a mock-up of what EVO 2023 could look like for MultiVersus, featuring the character in his iconic green shirt and a bandage on his nose.

Interestingly, Huynh himself retweeted this post. the official MultiVersus Twitter account even follows this fan account. It is yet unclear whether Walter White will indeed appear in MultiVersus, but fans are holding out hope that he will. MultiVersus is now available in open beta for PlayStation 4 and 5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S, and PC.
