After finishing second in Sunday's Hana Bank Seoul E-Prix season Finale in Seoul, Stoffel Vandoorne secured the Season 8 Formula E world championship. This is his first drivers' world championship.
Vandoorne also clinched back-to-back trophies for the team "in both the drivers' and the team championships," as per Engadget. His fellow Silver Arrows pilot Nyck de Vries was hailed as the defending series champ.
Vandoorne Thinks His Accomplishment is Something Special
Edoardo Mortara of ROKiT Venturi Racing won the historic 100th E-Prix race. The race brought the Gen2 years to a close, and now, the Gen3 car is set to make its debut next season.
According to Sports Net, Mercedes-EQ is withdrawing from the series with McLaren Racing taking over its operations.
Vandoorne reportedly capped one victory in Monaco. During his fourth season in Formula E and third with Mercedes, he finished on the podium a total of eight times. Previously, the 30-year-old Belgian driver already raced for McLaren in Formula One.
"World Champions, wow. It's just the best feeling ever. Just look at the season we've had - the consistency and the car has been amazing, and the team has done an incredible job," Vandoorne said in a statement.
Vandoorne added that he thinks every single one of the winners deserves it and their accomplishment is something special.
The Mercedes-EQ driver finished 33 points ahead of Mitch Evans from Jaguar TCS Racing in the standings.
Evans is said to be the "only driver mathematically remaining in contention" who can challenge Vandoorne for the title. But he only finished seventh in Sunday's race.
According to Vandoorne, Evans and Mortara pushed him all the way all along. He added that it was really all about consistency as the other racers have more wins than him but he has the most podiums.
He described the race this year as something incredible although he said that after this year he is drained as it involved a lot of effort for him and the team.
