Peacock has just dropped the teaser trailer for its new limited series, a true crime drama entitled "A Friend of the Family."
'A Friend of the Family' Narrates How the Broberg Family's Lives Were Altered
"A Friend of the Family" tells the harrowing true story of the Broberg family. Their daughter Jan was kidnapped multiple times in a span of several years by an obsessed family friend.
The official synopsis of the series stated that the Broberg family, led by Bob and Mary Ann were devoted to their "faith, family, and community."
Thus, when Robert and Gail Berchtold move to the neighborhood, the Brobergs decided to foster an an immediate friendship with them.
But Robert starts to develop an obsession over the Brobergs. Eventually, his obsession "leads to him kidnapping Jan multiple times," according to Digital Trends.
The sophisticated tactics of their neighbor leave the Brobergs vulnerable. Berchtold exploited their vulnerabilities, drove them apart, and turned their daughter against them, according to ComicBook.
This limited series narrates the story of how the Broberg family's lives were permanently altered. Moreover, it tells how the family survived the harrowing event.
"We were a loving, trusting, educated family. We were not stupid or careless. So how could this happen in our neighborhood, where we knew everyone, and everyone was a friend?" Jan Broberg said in a statement.
Broberg said that in reality, "most predators are not strangers but people we know." She said that the predators are, in fact, people who can build trust, and create special friendships. But eventually, these people can separate family members psychologically.
She added that she hopes the series will begin conversations among viewers for them to confront this kind of behavior.
'A Friend of the Family' Premiers on October 6
Jan and Mary Ann Broberg serve as producers on the series, while Nick Antosca, who previously created crime dramas "The Act" and "Candy," serve as showrunner.
"In the course of working on this story and talking with others who have worked on it, one thing has become clear: It's more relatable than it first seems," Antosca said in a statement.
He added that the Brobergs' story is "an extreme point on a continuum" that many been experienced by a lot of people.
Broberg noted that "A Friend of the Family" will make viewers talk, shout, cry, and angry.
She said that Alex Hedlund, Eliza Hittman, and Nick Antosca who led the team of writers, actors, designers, directors, and producers were able to capture how good people can be manipulated and their children victimized.
Broberg further stated that the story of her family is relatable, as many families have the same experiences with this kind of abuse.

"A Friend of the Family" will give new perspectives on the kidnapping. It will premiere on Peacock on Thursday, October 6. First three episodes will be streamed upon launch and new episodes will be streamed weekly.
