A reliable source is sharing some new Moto X details. The smartphone will reportedly receive a $100 price cut in time for the holidays and a wooden back will cost $50.
In the months leading up to the launch of the Moto X the internet was buzzing with all types of rumors of its reported specs and game changing features. The Moto X is the perfect example of why it is really important to take rumors and such reports with some skepticism. The smartphone was said to be a game changer that would outdo anything Apple and Samsung had planned. It was also said the smartphone would be the first device to ship with Android 5.0 Key Lime Pie and its reported specs were very impressive. We now know that none of those reports were even close to what Motorola and Google have released.
The Moto X, as it turns out, is a mid-range smartphone with specs that don't even come close to the specs of devices like the Samsung Galaxy S4, HTC One, and upcoming iPhone 5S. It's unclear why Motorola priced the Moto X at $199.99 with a new 2-year contract, especially when you can get a much powerful smartphone with better specs for the same price or, in some cases, even less.
One of the Moto X's "game changing" features can be found in its ability to allow users to customize the handset with different color back plates, accent colors, and more using the MotoMaker website. While it's definitely a nice feature, one has to wonder what Motorola was thinking by only allowing AT&T customers to have access to customizing the handset, while all other carriers can only offer the smartphone in choice of black or white. That's a lack of a major feature that Motorola has faced criticism for. According to a new report, it seems Motorola might be coming to its senses and will cut the price of the smartphone in time for the holidays.
The always reliable evleaks has posted new information via Twitter claiming that a Moto X $100 price drop will be coming in Q4. The tipster is also claiming the wooden back plates Motorola showed off at the Moto X's announcement will cost an extra $50.
The company might want to consider making this price cut happen sooner for a number reasons. Canadian wireless carrier, Rogers has already cut the price of the handset only days after its release. It originally sold the smartphone for $189.99 and has just lowered the price to $149.99 with a 2-year contract. Another major reason is the Moto X's $199 price will likely be the same price as the iPhone 5S and, according to leaked specs of Apple's flagship smartphone, the new iPhone will easily offer much higher-end specs and features that will trump the Moto X at $199.
Don't be surprised to see a price cut happen before Q4. If Rogers is already lowering the price, you can bet other carriers will soon follow.
