iPhone users can now download and enjoy the newest features Apple has to offer with iOS 16.
Apple has just released iOS 16, the "biggest update" it brings to the iPhone Lock Screen, as well as the capability to edit iMessages. The free update for iPhone 8 and newer devices comes after the tech giant last week revealed the iPhone 14, which became the subject of many memes on the internet.
Apple's theme for the highly anticipated iOS 16 is personalization. As reported by Engadget, Apple has overhauled the Lock Screen by adding an array of customizable options, so users get the chance to add or remove items they wish to have better access to while their iPhones are idle. Visually, users can now change the typeface and accent color of the clock that appears on the lock screen and add widgets. The new iOS 16 update also allows flexibility for users to select the information that is displayed on the topmost part of the screen for better access to things they need to see first.
Also touted as one of the major changes in Apple's iOS 16 is the addition of multiple lock screens, redesigned notifications that provide better tracking of Uber rides, scores, and other Live Activities, and finally, the coveted editing and unsending of messages on iMessage.
What's New in Apple's iOS 16
One of the most talked about changes in Apple's iOS 16 update is the ability to edit and unsend iMessages within the 15-minute time frame of sending the message, CNBC reported. This feature, which is only available for blue-bubble iMessages, enables users to select the sent messages they wish to edit and select Edit from the options. Simply make the changes and tap save. The recipient will see a mark that reads "Edited" upon receiving the message. They will also be able to see the original message sent, which might make for some awkward or funny moments. If users decide to unsend the entire message entirely, they can do so by simply pressing Undo Send.
Apple has also improved its voice texting feature with Smarter Dictation, which enables users to use voice to compose a text message without having to verbally add punctuation marks. This new feature will add commas, periods, question marks, or even emojis to a text message. Speaking of text messages, Apple has also improved group texting with Android users by enabling message recipients on Android to see reactions from iMessage users such as hearts, laughs, and more within text chains.
Another unique and never before seen feature in a smartphone is Apple's Safety Check, which enables users to quickly turn off all services and apps that use location that is being shared with others. Apple developed Safety Check in collaboration with women's groups to ensure users' privacy and protect personal data and safety, especially when leaving abusive relationships.
Apple has also made improvements to its Health app by adding medication alerts and better sleep monitoring, as well as adding the premium Apple Fitness+ on the iPhone, a paid feature that was previously available on the Apple Watch. Check out more updates from Apple here.
How to Install Apple's iOS 16 to the iPhone
Note that the new iOS 16 is only for iPhone models 8 through 13. The iPhone 14 already ships with iOS 16 and does not need to be updated. For those with iPhone 8's to 13's, simply open Settings on the iPhone and tap General. Make sure the device is connected to a strong internet provider and select Software Update. iOS 16 will then be downloaded and installed, and the iPhone will automatically restart once it is done installing the update.
