The Sims 4 Will Be Free to Play Soon — When Will It Begin?

The Sims 4 will soon be going free-to-play (F2P).

Video game developer Maxis has recently announced that Electronic Arts (EA) had decided to make the base game of the much-beloved The Sims 4 free to play everywhere.

EA and Maxis previously released The Sims 4 on Sept. 2, 2014, per The Sims Wiki. Since then, it is still going strong with its numerous expansions and game packs that allow players to unleash their creativity in architecture and storytelling.

The Sims 4 Free-To-Play Details

Maxis mentioned in its announcement that the base game of the much-beloved sandbox game, The Sims 4, will be free-to-play in mid-October for all available platforms.

This announcement means that the game's players on the PC, Mac, PlayStation 4 and 5, and Xbox One and Series X|S can download the sandbox game's base game for free come mid-October.

PC Gamer noted that this is the first time EA made a game the company is currently working on free to play, though it is fine for it to do so as the moneymakers of the game are its numerous expansion and game packs.

According to the game developer, it is excited to continue to welcome more players and give them the tools they need to "create new stories and explore without boundaries."

As a result of The Sims 4's base game going free-to-play, players can expect Maxis to focus more on developing "new and meaningful" experiences for players and continue creating and releasing packs, kits, and Sims Delivery Express drops sometime in the future.

Players who have bought the base game of The Sims 4 or those who plan on buying the base game between Sept. 14 and Oct. 17 will receive the Desert Luxe Kit for free, allowing players to have their sims relax in their very own modern oasis.

The kit comes with luxurious indoor and outdoor furniture whose design was inspired by "the natural landscape of the Southwestern desert," using materials like stone and wood.

Additionally, EA Play and EA Play Pro members will receive "an upgraded experience" when bundles of The Sims 4 become available on The Play List when the base game becomes free-to-play.

The Sim 4 EA Play Edition comes with the game's Get To Work expansion pack, while the EA Play Pro Edition includes Get To Work and the Toddler Stuff game pack.

When Will The Sims 4's Base Game Become Free-To-Play?

EA and Maxis will make The Sims 4's base game free-to-play for all applicable platforms worldwide on Oct. 18.

According to IGN, this milestone will coincide with Maxis' "Behind The Sims Summit" special-edition stream, which may reveal new content already lined up for the game.

Players should note, however, that they are only getting the base game for free and that its expansion and game packs must be purchased separately to enjoy the game's full potential so far.

Gamers interested in buying The Sims 4's base game before Oct. 18 can go to their respective platform's online store and purchase it for $19.99, per Polygon.
