Apple is investigating an iOS 16 activation bug being experienced by iPhone 14 users.
According to MacRumors, customers who are activating their new iPhone 14 may encounter an issue where "device activation during initial setup doesn't go through on Wi-Fi."
Apple Offers Fix to Activation Problem
According to Apple, "there is a known issue for iOS 16 that may impact device activations on open Wi-Fi networks," as per a memo seen by MacRumors.
Unfortunately, the solution given by Apple in order to resolve the issue sounds a bit complicated.
Apple advised customers to select "Connect to Mac or to a PC with iTunes" in the "initial iOS onboarding process when prompted to connect to a Wi-Fi network."
iPhone 14 users will then have to go back to the previous screen and attempt to activate again using Wi-Fi. This process has to be repeated until the activation process becomes successful.
According to MacRumors, Apple stated in the memo that "there are no current official fixes." The company also noted that support staff should "not create a repair [case] for the issue."
The timing for this activation bug is very unfortunate. Apple just launched the iPhone 14 models last September 7, and customers worldwide are just beginning to receive their pre-orders.
iPhone 14 users can update to iOS 16.0.1 to fix the issue with activation and migration during set up.
However, iPhone 14 users may need to restore using a Mac or PC to iOS 16.0.1 to fix the bug if they are facing activating issues with their iPhone 14 "out of the box". This step might be necessary in order to fully activate the new iPhone 14.
Apple also announced that "iMessage and FaceTime might not complete activation" for the new iPhone 14 and iPhone 14 Pro. It might be necessary to update the new iPhones to iOS 16.0.1.

iPhone 14 Users Need to Update to iOS 16.0.1 to Avoid iMessage, FaceTime Bugs
Meanwhile, users of newly activated iPhone 14 and iPhone 14 Pro may also experience problems receiving iMessage or FaceTime calls due to some bugs.
Users may see green iMessage bubbles instead of the usual blue ones when texting other iPhone users.
When using iMessage, users may see messages coming from the wrong account. For instance, users may see the sender's email address instead of the recipient's phone number.
According to Engadget, Apple has issued a solution to fix the iOS 16 bug that broke the activation of iMessage and FaceTime.
The iMessage and FaceTime bugs "has already been patched" in iOS 16.0.1. Therefore, to fix the issue all you have to do its to update your iPhone 14 or iPhone 14 Pro to iOS 16.0.1.
To update your new iPhone, activate it and set up your new iPhone 14. Afterwards go to the Setting app, then click General. Go to Software Update and tap Download and Install. Enter your passcode when your are asked to.
The iMessage and FaceTime bugs should have disappeared once you're done with the update.
According to Engadget, they tried to reach out to Apple for comment. But the company did not issue a statement. The timing of the issue is not ideal as the first experience of iPhone 14 users in using the unit might not be smooth.
