Accessory Maker Hyper Recalls Stackable GaN Charger Due to Overheating Issue

Hyper's 65W and 100W HyperJuice Stackable GaN chargers are being recalled by the accessory maker company due to a product design issue. According to MacRumors, the chargers can overheat while charging.

Hyper to Issue Store Credits to Customers for Returned Devices

Hyper already posted the recall order for 65W and 100W HyperJuice Stackable GaN chargers, and the 130W battery pack on the website of the United Stated Consumer Product Safety Commission (US CPSC).

According to The Verge, the company also sent an email to its customer requesting them to return the said devices. Customers will be given store credits in exchange for the returned devices.

Hyper products that have product design issue, the 65W and 100W GaN chargers, were originally introduced to the market in 2021.

Both devices "features a pass-through AC power outlet rated up to 1500W for stacking multiple units on top of one another," as per MacRumors.

The 100W GaN charger has three USB-C ports and one 18W USB-A port. On the other hand, the 65W GaN charger has two USB-C ports and one USB-A port.

Meanwhile, the accessory maker company released the USB-C 130W Battery Pack in 2019. It has a 27,000mAh battery capacity, and include two USB-C ports plus a USB-A port.

The two models of the charger allowed up to 16 units to be stacked on one outlet. Buyers are requested to stop using the device and communicate with Hyper to get store credit.

"This recall involves Hyper Products HyperJuice Stackable GaN 65W and 100W USB-C chargers. The chargers were sold in black and measure about 2 inches wide and 3 inches long," said the CPSC announcement.

Hyper, CPSC Advise Customers to Stop Using the Recalled Devices

According to The Verge, earlier this year, Hyper's CEO Daniel Chin attempted to deny that the recalled devices were intentionally pulled from stores because of design issue. He tried to downplay the issues of the complaints.

But now, the recall of the devices has been confirmed. In addition, seven reports were received by Hyper concerning its overheating stackable GaN chargers. It resulted to damage in the charging units.

On the other hand, there are two other reports of the battery pack, which overheated and caused "smoke, melting, and property damage."

While there are no injuries recorded, this posits danger to consumers who are still using the Hyper devices.

Between October 2020 and August 2022, Hyper sold over 18,200 stackable GaN chargers in North America, according to US CPSC. Meanwhile, the company sold over 13,800 of the battery packs between October 2018 and April 2022.

The agency is advising consumers to stop using all of the recalled products immediately due to its overheating problem that can cause fire hazard.

For the return of affected units, a self-addressed prepaid shipping label is being provided by Hyper. Upon return of the products, the company will issue store credits. In case the product is no longer available, customers can present their proof of purchase.
