The Made by Google event on Oct. 6 unveiled the Google Pixel Watch highlighting its features except for the nagging question of how long the wearable can have OS updates.
A few days later, Google assured that the smartwatch can get updates for "at least three years" from its first sale in the US on Google Store - that is 2025.
Unlike Google, Apple was straightforward in its software support policy. The Cupertino tech giant will provide OS updates for its Apple Watch for at least until 2027.
Google Pixel Watch Updates
The company said the updates will include feature drops, security patches, and new OS releases from time to time. It did not mention, however, how frequent will Google give updates for the Pixel Watch.
In contrast, Google has a different slew of support for its Pixel phones - five years of security patches and three years of updates for its OS.
It is not clear why the company has a different support policy for the Pixel phones when compared to its Pixel Watch.
Pixel Watch Also Lags Behind Samsung
While Apple has beaten both Google and Samsung for its software support policy, the latter is ahead of Google.
The Korean tech company guaranteed four years of Wear OS and One UI updates for its Galaxy Watch 4 and 5 series. The same support Samsung had guaranteed for its smartphones.
In effect, Samsung has guaranteed support for the product until 2026 giving users peace of mind even though it unveiled its Galaxy Watch 5 two months ago.
'Best of Google And Fitbit'
The landing page of Google Store touted the Pixel Watch as the "first smartwatch to deliver the best of Google and Fitbit."
There are lots of reasons why the Big G is confident about its Pixel Watch with the following features, namely:
Google Maps helps users find their way to places they are familiar with.
Google Wallet gives users financial flexibility and freedom. This feature enables users to add cards to Google Wallet to be able to use "Google Pay to speed through checkout with quick, contactless payments" either in stores or in transit.
Google Assistant allows users to "play music, respond to texts, get directions, and more" by just saying "Hey Google" to start with.
Gmail and Calendar help users to answer emails and look for the dates right on the watch.
YouTube Music keeps songs within reach.
Other smart features include the following: Fitbit to track heart rate, ECG app to assess heart rhythm, track sleep stages during nighttime and health metrics, protection against falls with its fall protection and Emergency SOS, and 6 months of Fitbit Premium upon purchase.
Galaxy Watch 5 Advantage Over Pixel Watch
Despite its fantastic features, Google Pixel Watch still lags behind Apple and Samsung when it comes to software support policy.
Its poor software support will give Samsung's Galaxy Watch 5 a clear advantage over the Pixel Watch.
Galaxy Watch 5, according to Android Police, will have an easy run to the finish as the best Android Smartwatch in the market today.
It is baffling to know Google's lackluster support policy knowing that Pixel devices are on top in receiving OS updates.
