Blackmagic Design’s DaVinci Resolve Is Set To Arrive on iPads in Q4 2022 — Is It Free?

A proper DaVinci Resolve app for the iPad is coming soon.

Blackmagic Design has recently announced that its popular video editing app, DaVinci Resolve, will soon be available for download on iPads in the last quarter of 2022.

The app was previously only accessible on Apple's platform through its Macs and Macbooks. Hints of having it on the iPad only came during Apple's introduction of the M2-powered iPad Pro, per The Verge.

DaVinci Resolve For iPad Details

Blackmagic Design mentioned in its announcement that the DaVinci Resolve app for the iPad Pro would be optimized for Apple Silicon, providing four times faster Ultra HD ProRes render performance when used on the new iPad Pro with the new M2 chip.

iPad Pro users with the M1 chip are not excluded from the fun, as Blackmagic adds HDR support to the device.

As for its functionality, the app can open and create standard DaVinci Resolve project files compatible with the desktop version of DaVinci Resolve 18. It also has support for file formats such as H.264, H. 265, Apple ProRes, and Blackmagic RAW.

The app can also support multi-user collaboration via Blackmagic Cloud. Grant Perry, Blackmagic's CEO, mentioned that users could collaborate on the same timeline with other people like editors, colorists, audio engineers, and VFX artists simultaneously thanks to the feature.

Meanwhile, clips can also be imported from an iPad Pro's internal storage, Photos library, USB-C media disks, and iCloud.

The cut and color pages for editing and color correction are optimized for the iPad Pro's display. This optimization will allow them to provide faster edits on photos, videos, and color and finish more "high-end" feature films and television shows more easily.

The color page also comes with a "more approachable" feel with features that make it simpler for beginners to use the app while learning how to use the more complicated ones. It also has new primary control sliders and a substantial range of primary and secondary color grading features, including PowerWindow, qualifiers, tracking, and advanced HDR grading tools.

The app also co with the iPad Pro's many peripherals, such as the Apple Pencil, Smart Keyboard Folio, and Apple Studio Display.

To be more specific, DaVinci Resolve for iPad pros will work with Apple Pencil, Magic Trackpad, Magic Keyboard, and Smart Keyboard Folio.

It can also display itself on external monitors through Apple Studio Display, Pro Display XDR, or an AirPlay display.

However, the app is only compatible with iPad Pros running iPadOS 16 or newer.

DaVinci Resolve App for iPad Price

Blackmagic Design stated that the iPad Pro app for DaVinci Resolve would be free to download from the Apple App Store sometime in the fourth quarter of 2022.

The app will come with an upgrade to DaVinci Resolve Studio for iPad as an in-app purchase, but the company didn't mention how much the upgrade will cost users.

There is no word from Blackmagic if the app will eventually become available to older iPad models that don't have M-series chips.
