Internet group WikiLeaks has released nearly 400,000 classified reports from the US military that cover secret level information from the Iraq War on this day in 2010.
According to Wired, the leak on the war's log page shows information that documents raw field reports of "Significant Action" that the US forces made on ground.
While it has been 12 years since news outlets have provided details and analysis of the information from the leak, here are five things you need to know from the US-Iraq War:
1. Files Suggest Evidences Of Deaths in Thousands
The reports show the range and frequency of the tragedies that hit Iraquis in the war, which logged 109,000 violent deaths between 2004 and the end of 2009.
According to the BBC, these deaths included 66,081 civilians, 23,984 "enemies," 15,196 members of Iraqi security, and 3,771 coalition troops.
In a cross-checking analysis of the logs, Iraq Body Count has been able to identify around 15,000 previously unknown civilians.
2. Iraq's PM Accuses WikiLeaks of Sabotage
Nouri al-Maliki, Iraq's Prime Minister, claims that the release of these confidential documents has caused political unrest in his country.
In a statement from the PM's office, WikiLeaks has been accused of trying to sabotage his attempt to form a new government by triggering anger against leaders like himself.
However, his opponents believe that the documents further highlight the need to establish power-sharing structures in the government rather than an authoritarian one under al-Maliki.
3. US Authorities And Reports Of Abuse
Reuters writes that the US authorities have also faced accusations of neglect after failing to investigate cases of abuse of Iraqi prisoners by police and soldiers.
The leaks also says that have been cases of abuse under the US custody, including accounts that suspects US soldiers torturing and raping civilian detainees.
4. Iranians And Their War Influence
Reuters also says that military intelligence reports have revealed that Iranian agents have been training, arming, and directing militants in the war, which has concerned the US at the time.
One document even claims that the US military has warned that a militia commander behind the deaths and kidnapping of both US troops and Iraqi officials have been because of Iran.
Additionally, the WikiLeaks files have also shown that American hikers have been detained on the Iraqi side of the border, which has raised persistent external threats on the nations.
5. 'Collateral Murder' Video Sparks Controversy
The files released by the internet group have also shown a video report of a separate shooting involving the Apache helicopter that has bombed Bahgdad during the US-Iraq war.
This video from 2007 has shown that two Reuters and an unarmed Iraqi man have gone on the scene to try and rescue a wounded war victim, Wired reports.
In relation to this leak, Bradley Manning, a former Army intelligence analyst has been arrested for confessing to supplying WikiLeaks with the classified videos and documents.
