AT&T to begin taking Galaxy Gear smartwatch pre-orders on Sept. 17

AT&T has announced it will begin taking pre-orders for the Samsung Galaxy Gear smartwatch beginning Sept. 17. The Galaxy Gear will cost $299 and is expected to ship in October.

Samsung has just announced its first Android-based smartwatch, the Galaxy Gear, a couple of weeks ago. The gadget runs a modified version of Android 4.3 Jelly Bean and works exclusively with the Galaxy Note 3, but Samsung has confirmed it will release an update for the Galaxy S4 and Galaxy S3 sometime in October to allow full support for those handsets as well. The company also claims to have about 70 apps available at launch and expects more developers to create apps for the smartwatch in the future.

AT&T has just announced that it will begin taking pre-orders for the Galaxy Gear on Sept. 17. The carrier has posted some highlights of the Galaxy Gear:

Stay in the moment

Galaxy Gear lets you stay connected without getting distracted. Keep your phone in your pocket but make sure you never miss that important call. And when you're at dinner, just glance at your wrist instead of cutting the conversation short.

Hands-free calling & texting

Go hands-free when your hands are full. Answer calls and read messages right from Galaxy Gear. It's the simple way to keep up when you have a lot going on.

Quick access notifications

Stay on top of your world with real-time notifications. Whether it's a phone call from your family or an important meeting on your calendar, Galaxy Gear keeps you constantly connected to the things that matter most.

The perfect companion

Together, Samsung Galaxy Note 3 and Samsung Galaxy Gear enable you to be more connected but less distracted. Receive calls, emails and texts all from your wrist, so you can stay in touch.

The Galaxy Gear features a 1.63-inch 320 x 320 Super AMOLED display and runs a modified version of Android 4.3. It uses a single-core 800MHz Exynos processor with 512MB of RAM and 4GB of internal storage. It has a 1.9-megapixel camera with autofocus built into its strap and is capable of recording full HD video. It includes NFC, Bluetooth 4.3 LE, gyroscope, pedometer, and accelerometer. It's packing a 315 mAh battery that Samsung says will be provide enough power to last a full day of "regular use." The Galaxy Gear uses S Voice to allow users to issue voice commands that can create new alarms, dictate new messages, initiate phone calls, and more.

You can head over to AT&T on Sept. 17 to pre-order the Samsung Galaxy Gear for $299. The smartwatch is expected to ship in October.
