Apple Releases New Ad Placement to the App Store

According to the company, app-related ads will begin rolling in the App Store's main Today tab as well as in a "You Might Also Like" section, which is located at the bottom of the individual app listings.

The roll out of additional ads to Apple users will be implemented to all countries except China. So, you should prepare yourself to see more ads the next time you need to download an app on your iPhone.

Since 2016, Apple has been selling search ads through the App. However, the Today tab was previously "reserved for recommendations from the company's editorial team," according to Engadget.

"With a Today tab ad, your app can appear prominently on the front page of the App Store - making it some of the first content users see when they begin their App Store visit," said a support page on Apple's website about App Store ad placements.

With the roll out of the ads this October 25, developers will be able to run ads in the Today tab for the first time.

Until today, the Today tab only showed content selected from the App Store's editorial staff, which does not have payment on placement.

On the other hand, developers will now be able to advertise their apps on other apps' pages through the "You Might Also Like" section.

Previously, you will only see App Store ads in the search results based on keywords. Likewise, you will only see ads in the "Suggested" section of the Search tab.

Now that the company is rolling out ads in the Today tab and the "You Might Also Like" section, there will be a total of four advertising options in the App Store.

Apple Hopes to Increase its Advertising Revenue Over the Next Few Years

The news about Apple's plan to bring more ads placements first surfaced in July. The decision to expand the placement of ads to the Today tab and "You Might Also Like" section is part of a bigger move by the company to widen its advertising business.

As per Engadget, a recent report from Bloomberg's Mark Gurman says that the Cupertino-based company aims to increased its advertising revenue to $10 billion annually over the next few years.

"Apple Search Ads provides opportunities for developers of all sizes to grow their business. Like our other advertising offerings, they will only contain content from apps' approved App Store product pages, and will adhere to the same rigorous privacy standards," according to Apple.

The advertising revenue of the company is reported as part of its services business, which also includes warranties, search engine licensing, App Store sales, and online subscription revenue, among other things.

In 2021, the company reported more than $68 billion in services revenue. Besides the App Store ads, Apple is reportedly planning to introduce search ads to Maps.
