Assassin’s Creed’s Standalone Multiplayer Game Is Officially in Development — Here’s What We Know

Assassin's Creed's standalone multiplayer experience is now in development.

Video game developer Ubisoft recently revealed that development of the Assassin's Creed series' project codename "Invictus" had officially begun, bringing the re-inclusion of multiplayer back to the series ever closer to reality.

The last Assassin's Creed game that was released with multiplayer mode was Assassin's Creed Unity, which Ubisoft launched on Nov. 11, 2014, per the Assassin's Creed Wiki.

Assassin's Creed Project Codename Invictus Development Details

Ubisoft revealed in its latest earnings call that a development team that includes some veterans of the company's other online action-fighting game, For Honor, is currently developing the Assassin's Creed project, Invictus.

Having people that previously worked on For Honor isn't as surprising as the fact that Invictus is now in development. Ubisoft previously announced during its Ubisoft Forward event on Sept. 2022 that developers that previously worked on other titles, such as For Honor and Rainbow Six Siege, will be among the development team created to work on Invictus, per Tech Radar.

However, Ubisoft's revelation about Invictus being in development officially confirms many of the rumors connected to it, according to PCGamesN.

With Assassin's Creed Infinity being more like a "platform" or a "hub" that will let players launch future Assassin's Creed games, the inclusion of a standalone multiplayer experience is good news for the series' fans.

What Is Assassin's Creed Invictus?

Not much is known about Invictus apart from the fact that it is a standalone multiplayer experience. However, this fact alone is more than enough to theorize what Ubisoft intends to do with it.

Online multiplayer isn't something you'd instantly associate with the Assassin's Creed series, but Ubisoft experimented with the idea of adding it in the past. The company started to add an online multiplayer mode into the series with Assassin's Creed: Brotherhood for the PlayStation 3 in November 2010.

According to Game Rant, Brotherhood's multiplayer mode came with a handful of game modes: "Wanted" is a free-for-all shank fest wherein players have to track their target amidst a crowd of NPCs and kill them, all while being tracked and hunted themselves.

The game also offers cooperative play, with game modes like "Artifact Hunt" dividing players into groups to see which team manages to steal the most artifacts.

These modes remained playable on two future game installments, such as Assassin's Creed Revelations, Assassin's Creed 3, and Assassin's Creed 4: Black Flag.

Assassin's Creed: Unity was the first AC game Ubisoft developed that featured online cooperative play, wherein a group of four friends can help each other complete missions and contracts, per Tom's Guide. However, they cannot help players on story missions that progress the game.

With these in mind, it is probable that Invictus could have an improved and expanded version of the online multiplayer game modes featured from Brotherhood to Black Flag.

The Gamer also predicts that Invictus will be a free-to-play online multiplayer game, as it has become a popular platform to launch games in.
