Instagram confirms that a bug has been causing random account suspensions and follower drops on the platform amid the outage.
According to Engadget, the company claims to have fixed the problem since the error was reported but did not explain why it occurred.
Instagram Threatens To Ban Users From Their Accounts
The social media site crashed on Monday and sent thousands of users notifications suggesting that their accounts would be locked by the end of the day.
The warning states that the owner of the account has 30 days to disagree with the ban by clicking on a blue alert box, Express writes.
In a tweet, Instagram promises its users that they are looking into what might have caused the problem, but the company still has not released a statement as to why it happened.
Users believe that the warnings and account locks were triggered by not following community guidelines, even reporting that there are pages that have been banned without a heads-up.
While not everyone on the platform experienced the suspension bug, some users have claimed that they saw their followers drop, as well as the number of people they follow.
Because of this, users have taken to Twitter to post about their frustrations about the crash, which got #instagramdown trending on the platform.
According to Express, Meta tells users that it is best to avoid accessing links they might have received from the outage as they can be part of a scam trying to steal user data.
In connection, Instagram's parent company also confirms that the outage affected users in different parts of the world, for which they apologize.
Tech Crunch that it is important to note that just before the platform crashed, Instagram had just issued an app update for iOS users.
Thousands Of Users Are Affected By The Instagram Outage
iMore reports that resorts of users not being able to access Instagram's services reached as high as 8,000 per hour based on Downdetector's site.
Users posted their complaints about the outage at around 10 a.m. with already 7,600 incident reports, which immediately fell to 2,700 by 11:30 a.m.
Forbes says that users worldwide have experienced the consequences of the outage, including Instagram's most followed personality, Cristiano Ronaldo.
Because of the glitch, the soccer star seems to have shed 3 million of his 493 million followers, while Instagram's own account lost more than a million followers.
According to Engadget, this is not the first significant system crash that affected Instagram recently, as other Meta social networks have suffered major outages as well.
Since September alone, this is the third time the social media sharing platform has been bugged, suggesting that Instagram still has a lot of troubles to address.
In 2019, Instagram suffered two glitches in a month, which exposed users' passwords to employees, risking a breach.
While Instagram's community continues to grow, Meta needs to assure users that it is reliable in addressing the bugs that can affect the growth of this social networking site.
