1. Make Sure That the iPhone Powers Up

The most important part of buying a used iPhone is to ensure that it still powers up, according to How to Geek. Check if the iPhone still turns on when you press the power button.

Do not be swayed by excuses that it has a dead battery, that's why it doesn't power up. Try to charge it and turn it on. If it is working properly, it should boot up to where the screen says "Hello."

Another consideration when buying a used iPhone is the inclusion of a charger. While the owner might just sell the device without the charger, there is a possibility that the unit is stolen if it is not a complete package. Consider bringing a charger with you to check if the iPhone still charges.

2. Check the Battery Health of the iPhone

iPhones use lithium-ion batteries that degrade over time. This means that a used iPhone might have a battery health of less than 100 percent.

Before deciding to buy a used iPhone, check the maximum capacity and performance capability of the battery.

  • Just simply go to Settings.
  • Then go to Battery.
  • Finally go to Battery Health.

Check if the maximum capacity is still above 90 percent. If it is lower than 90 percent, it means that the battery has declined significantly already. Thus, it might not be wise to proceed with the purchase, as you might soon need to replace the battery.

3. Check if the Speakers and Microphones Work

You will be using your iPhones to make calls, so it is only practical that it has working speakers and microphones. Check if the speakers and microphones of the iPhone that you're planning to buy are working.

To test the microphone, record something using Apple's built-in Voice Memos. Afterward, play back the recording to test the speakers. You should also check the device's earpiece volume by making a phone call.

4. Check the iPhone's Camera

Check the iPhone's cameras for cracks and scratches. But in addition to this, also check if the cameras are working by taking photos using both the back and front cameras, as per MUO.

For used iPhones that have been brought to repair centers, there are chances that the authentic cameras were replaced by unauthorized ones. Therefore, it would be wise to check the quality of the photos. Make sure they are clear to be sure the iPhone's cameras are authentic and still working properly.

5. Check the IMEI Number and the Serial Number

Check the International Mobile Equipment Identity (IMEI) number to know if it matches the proof of purchase.

  • Go to Settings.
  • Go to General.
  • Go to About to check the IMEI number.

Just like the IMEI number, also check for the serial number of the iPhone. It will give you an idea of where and when the iPhone was manufactured.
