Cherry AG is set to unveil MX Black Clear-Top, a retro design of a popular keyboard switch of the 1980s.
The Munich-based company said releasing the new "MX Nixie" will bring the users, who understand the value of linear-switching, to a new level of experience.
Cherry AG said MX Black Clear-Top got the nickname MX Nixie because it was originally built for Nixdorf Computer AG, maker of built keyboards for terminals, mini computers, and servers.
Specs
Engadget said used switches are scarce and usually high-priced, which could be the driving force for Cherry to build an updated version of the keyboard switch.
The MX Nixie switch is a variation of Cherry MX Black switch with modifications.
A pre-lubed new MX Nixie comes with a milky top housing and a linear switch characterization. It also has a slightly increased actuation force of 63.5 centinewtons from the original actuation of 60.
In addition, Cherry has integrated the diode into the switch for n-key rollover or NKRO that allows the keyboard to register every key press.
The Munich-based company, in a statement posted on its website, said the milky top upper housing is made of plastic polymer. Its milky top case differentiates the product from MX Black.
Cherry said the upgraded keyboard switch retains the vintage design of the spring.
The company assured users that MX Nixie is at par with its newest MX switches. It will offer the MX Black Clear-Top in both pre-lubed and without lubrication. Computer device enthusiasts may want to do the lubrication themselves.
MX Black Clear-Top will arrive in 2023, Cherry said.
Key Switch Is Important
Keyboards come in all sizes and shapes, wireless or wired, and with or without fancy lightings.
The most important factor, however, to consider when buying a keyboard is the key switch.
A right key switch, according to XDA, can make a big difference compared to a membrane-based keyboard.
Keyboard switches are available in three categories such as linear, tactile, or clicky.
A linear switch usually feels smooth. This type of switch gives consistent actuation sans tactile feedback. Many gamers would love to invest in linear switches.
Tactile switches are a lot similar in construction with linear except for its bump midway through the downward travel of the key. A bump is the actuation point where every keypress is fully registered before it hits bottom. Switches of this type usually give a faster typing experience, making it the choice of typists.
Clicky switches have the same concept with tactiles. This type of switch is bumpy like a tactile switch but they are louder. It offers a bump with accompanying audio feedback, sounding like an old typewriter.
Understanding Keyboard Switch
A keyboard switch is the underlying mechanism below the keys. And in each of these keys is a mechanism consisting of housing, stem, spring, and other parts such as click bars.
Computer input device makers can vary some of these components, giving way to an almost unlimited options in making the actual switch with a variety of properties to select from. Switches then will vary in terms of actuation force, sounds, travel distance, and many more.
Almost, if not all keyboards have removable keycaps. Many of these keyboards also allow swapping of the switching mechanisms.
If swapping options is not available, users can have the choice of which type of keyboard switch to buy. Having said this, it is necessary for users to understand and know the different types of keyboard switches available in the market.
