Elon Musk Says Twitter Will Suspend Impersonators

Elon Musk tweeted on Sunday that Twitter accounts that impersonate another person will be permanently suspended from the social media platform, according to Axios.

According to the new CEO of the platform, users who engage in impersonation without a clear specification that it is a parody will be permanently banned from Twitter. And this time, the social media will not issue a warning.

In a tweet, Musk said that they had previously issued a warning before suspension. However, now that Twitter is rolling out widespread verification, they will not issue a warning anymore.

Twitter Already Suspended Some Accounts That Impersonate Elon Musk

Musk's move to suspend impersonators on Twitter was fueled by the incident involving several accounts that changed their display name to Elon Musk, as per The Guardian.

These users, which some are celebrities, tweeted as 'Elon Musk' in what appears to be a response to the CEO's decision to make the verified accounts available to everyone for $8 per month.

Among the accounts that appear to be suspended are Kathy Griffin, a US comedian, as well as an Australian satirical website called the Chaser.

In addition, the new owner of Twitter added that any name change would eventually lead to temporary loss of a verified checkmark.

Upon the billionaire's takeover to Twitter, he implemented some drastic changes. After completing the $44 billion deal, he immediately fired former CEO Parag Agrawal along with other top executives.

Moreover, in a move to cut costs, the social media platform reportedly reduced its workforce by 25 percent on Musk order.

Another change that the billionaire introduced is ending the work-from-anywhere policy of the company. This means that employees who will not be affected by the layoff will have to report in the office in the coming days.

More changes might arrive to the platform in the coming days as its new CEO work his ways in the company.

Twitter Delays Rollout of $8 Verified Accounts Until After US Midterm Elections

Previously, Musk stated that he is against permanent bans in Twitter. With the recent bans due to impersonation of accounts, it seems that the company's CEO has changed his mind.

In what appears to be a defensive stance against his recent action, the billionaire affirmed his commitment to free speech in a tweet. Likewise, he said that he would continue to let the account that flags his movements to stay online.

Musk claimed that his latest announcement of rolling out the verified account to everyone for $8 is his way of democratizing the service, according to AP.

A Twitter update for iOS devices on Saturday, which was listed on Apple's app store indicated that users who "sign up now" for the latest "Twitter Blue with verification" can get the blue check next to their names, meaning a verified account.

But according to The Guardian, Twitter will delay the rollout of the new feature until after the US midterm elections.

The delay is due to the concerns being raised that users would be able to buy verification, and pretend to be a political figure. This might lead to electoral confusion.
