Death Stranding just officially turned three years old on PlayStation 4 and Hideo Kojima just revealed that the game already hit 10 million sales, as per PC Gamer.
On the third anniversary of the game's release, over 10 million players have experienced the genre-defying game.
Hideo Kojima Tweets About the New Milestone of Death Stranding
In a tweet, Kojima said that he is happy that there are over 10 million players around the world who are loosely connected in the game.
Part of the 10 million sales are the Death Stranding for PlayStation 4 and PC, and the Director's Cut on PlayStation 5 and PC. Additionally, copies downloaded via PlayStation Plus and PC Game Pass are also included in the record.
The game was released on PS4 in November 2019. It got a mixed review from both critics and gamers.
According to IGN, the mixed reception is attributed to the fact that gamers and critics alike are unprepared for the radical departure of the game for the usual stealth espionage of Hideo Kojima.
However, the achievement of the game is considered a huge milestone that's worth celebrating.
The game was brought to PC via the Steam and Epic Games Store in July 2020. With that, Death Strandingfound a new influx of players.
The following year, in September 2021, Death Stranding Directors Cut was launched onto PC, PS4 and PS5. This new definitive version of the game brought with it new story content as well as game modes, and equipment.
As a treat to many fans of the game, a surprise arrived in August earlier this year when the base Death Stranding game finally became available to the Xbox PC Game Pass service.

Death Stranding Finds Success After an Initial Failure
While it is not surprising for a game from the likes of Kojima for find commercial success, it didn't always appear that way.
When it first came out, Death Stranding seems to be a flop. According to Engadget, a ResetEra post from 2020 said that Sony was reportedly disappointed with the game's sales.
According to the author of the post, three million copies of the game remain sitting idly in warehouses as of March of that year.
However, there was a critical reevaluation of the game fueled by the pandemic and the game's arrival on PC.
With Death Stranding, many gamers were able to make sense of a world that had changed overnight. By July 2021, the game's record hit five million in sales.
The game is an action game developed by Kojima Productions after its split from Konami in 2015. The game was published by Sony Interactive Entertainment for the PlayStation 4 in November 2019. In July 2020, it was published by 505 Games for Windows.
Players of the game control Sam Porter Bridges. He is tasked to deliver supplies to isolated colonies. He also reconnects the isolated colonies through a wireless communications network.
In the game, a cataclysmic event caused destructive creatures to begin roaming the Earth. The game has a complex lore and narrative focused on mass extinction events, the afterlife, loneliness and loss.
