Google Releases a Nest Wifi Pro Update to Fix the Slow Internet Speeds

Some users of the new Nest Wifi Pro are experiencing slow internet speeds. To address the problem, Google said it will roll out a software update early next week, as per Engadget.

In a statement issued to The Verge, Google Nest Wifi's product lead Sanjay Noronha said that the company is already "investigating reports of a small number of users experiencing reduced internet speeds on Nest Wifi Pro routers."

Moreover, Noronha said that the company's team of experts is "working to roll out a fix" to the issue of the device.

Slow Internet Speeds Mostly Affect Users in the UK with PPPoE Networks

When Google launched the $199 Nest Wifi Pro mesh router last month, the company boasted that it is capable of supporting internet speeds of up to 5.4 Gbps, given that your internet plan supports the said speed.

According to 9to5Google, the device comes with the promise of Wi-Fi 6E. With this, Nest Wifi Pro is intended to enable high-speed connectivity. This applies both within your home network and when you're using the internet.

Moreover, the device also opens up a 6GHz band. This helps mitigate network congestion. It also automatically adjusts "network performance to minimize disruptions."

However, shortly after its release, reports began to surface on the Google Nest Community forums that the Nest Wifi Pro limits the download and upload speeds to between 40Mbps and 90Mbps.

Users in the forum complained that their old Nest Wifi Pro mesh routers, which only support Wi-Fi 5, were outperforming the new device when it comes to speed tests.

It is worth noting that not everyone who bought the new router is experiencing these issues.

Google confirmed to The Verge that the issue mostly affects users in the UK with point-to-point protocol over ethernet (PPPoE) networks.

Many digital subscribers' line (DSL) providers use this system. It involves configuring your router with a username and password before you can connect to the internet.

However, based on the report in the forum, the issue seems to affect users in the US and other parts of Europe. Those with fiber are affected as well.

Google is Actively Investigating the Issue with Nest Wifi Pro

According to 9to5Goole, the tech company is actively investigating the issue with Nest Wifi Pro specific to customers in the UK.

As of writing, the exact cause of the Nest Wifi Pro slowdowns is still unknown. However, a few common trends among those reporting low download speeds were observed.

For instance, most of the users who commented in the forums are paying for fiber internet, specifically fiber, to the premises or "FTTP." In this case, the Nest Wifi Pro would be connected directly to the fiber optical network terminal (ONT).

Another common trend among commenters is that most of them seem to point at PPPoE. It's a protocol that authenticates your internet provider via Ethernet.

Affected subscribers have taken a few approaches to solve their issues. There are some users who have tried putting another router, an old Google Wifi, or any other device, ahead of the Nest Wifi Pro. However, this solution hasn't worked for everyone.
