As we get closer to the October launch of the Galaxy Note 3, a new report claims that Samsung is also getting ready to launch a Note 3 variant with a flexible OLED screen.
Not long after Samsung launched its flagship Galaxy S4, rumors began to appear that the company was going to launch spin-offs of the smartphone. The rumors turned out to be true in June, when the company announced the Galaxy S4 Active, S4 Zoom, and S4 Mini. The Galaxy Note 3 is also rumored to be getting its own family of devices with an expected mid-range variant for emerging markets, and a new report suggests that Samsung plans to launch a special edition Galaxy Note 3 that will feature a flexible OLED display as early as next month.
Samsung and LG both manufacture displays for smartphones and have each developed their own flexible smartphone display. The two companies are said to be in a race to be the first in bringing its flexible display to consumers. LG announced that it is planning to release a smartphone with a flexible display later this year and some rumors claimed it would debut on the LG Vu 3. The company has just made the Vu 3 official, however, and it does not have a flexible display, which gives Samsung a shot at the bragging rights.
A new report now claims that Samsung is already under way with its own plan to bring a flexible display to the smartphone market and beat LG to the punch. The device will reportedly be a Galaxy Note 3 variant that will use a plastic flexible OLED display. The report goes on to say that due to low yields of the display, Samsung will release the Galaxy Note 3 variant as a "limited edition" handset. The flexible display is said to significantly reduce the thickness and weight of the device. The source also claims that Samsung could launch the smartphone as early as next month.
The report does not indicate where this device is expected to launch or at what price. Take this report with a grain of salt, as we'll have to file this in the rumor category for now.
