Domino's is going electric when it comes to its delivery fleet.
The world's largest pizza company announced on Monday that it will be rolling out 800 2023 Chevy Bolt electric vehicles (EV). This will make the company's fleet the largest when it comes to electric pizza delivery in the US.
The company's acquisition will start with over 100 EVs rolling out in November. The electric cars will arrive at the store's select franchises throughout the country. An additional 700 EVs will arrive in the coming months, according to the company.
Domino's Aspires for Zero Emission
Domino's is adding over 800 Chevy Bolt EVs to its fleet, wrapped with custom branding but without other bells and whistles, according to The Verge.
Domino is taking its plan and ambitions for zero-emission to a new level. The company ran a test program that used custom electric bikes for pizza deliveries in 2019. This was made to reduce emissions and save on gas.
The company saw faster delivery times and higher team member satisfaction as a result of the test program.
After proving to a be hit among delivery drivers and customers, the company has decided to expand the program.
With the 800-Chevy Bolt fleet, Domino's is one of the first to implement EVs at scale. The company launched pizza delivery in 1960. It initially used a VW Beatle.
The company started testing self-driving delivery in 2015. Now, with its decision to roll out EVs in delivering pizza, it is taking significant steps to cut costs, reduce emissions, and drive employee satisfaction, according to Electrek.
According to Domino's CEO Russel Weiner, the company has always been on the cutting edge of pizza delivery. As vehicle technology continues to evolve, using EVs in this current time makes sense.
Weiner said that they met a commitment to net-zero carbon emissions by 2050, and rolling out over 800 EVs is their way to begin reducing their environmental impact.
Domino's Believes the EVs Are Efficient in Making Deliveries
According to The Verge, Domino's will have 855 new EVs to be exact. On a single charge, Chevy Bolt EVs are capable of going 259 miles.
Given that most stores only deliver to their local areas, the company believes that each car could last a couple of days of deliveries without having to plug in, making the EVs efficient in making deliveries.
The 2023 Chevy Bolt EV is also one of the most affordable electric cars on the market now that GM has slashed prices on the said model. It now has a starting price of $26,595.
Domino's has fostered a partnership with Enterprise Fleet Management. The said company will take care of the purchasing, maintenance, and other logistics regarding Domino's fleet of EVs.
According to Domino's spokesperson Danielle Bulger, the company did not purchase the entire fleet, as per The Detroit News. He said that most of the EVs were purchased by franchises.
But currently, the company is not yet retiring its gas-powered delivery vehicles. According to Bulger, this is because Domino's still has many delivery vehicles across the country that use their own cars to make deliveries.
