Elon Musk has confirmed via tweet a tentative new plan for Twitter user verification which will be released on Friday, December 2, according to Euronews.
The move to introduce the new verification plan comes after he paused monetizing the "blue checkmark," which verifies user identity, following a wave of impersonators and pranksters impersonating brands, companies, and celebrities.
According to Engadget, there will be three types of verification marks - gold for companies, grey for governments, and blue for individuals, celebrities or not.
All Verified Accounts Will Be Manually Authenticated, Elon Musk Says
Musk wrote on Twitter that before the color-coded check is activated, all verified accounts will be manually authenticated.
The billionaire already previously stated that the social media platform would possibly use a different color check for organizations.
This is, however, the first time the CEO revealed what those colors will likely be. Meanwhile, as of writing, it is unknown if all verified users, including government and companies, will have to pay the Twitter Blue fee of $8 per month.
The multi-company CEO added that if verified to be a part of an organization, individuals can have a secondary tiny logo showing they belong to it.
Twitter's new verification program was launched by the CEO with the idea that anyone who joins Twitter Blue for $8 a month would get a blue checkmark next to their name.
As many people predicted, though, the system quickly became chaotic due to account impersonation.
For instance, one Twitter user pretended to be drugmaker Eli Lilly and tweeted that insulin would be free. Eli Lilly had to apologize afterward. However, it already caused damage as the company's shares dropped.
As more fake accounts mushroomed, the social media platform was forced to shut down the system after just 48 hours.
The billionaire announced afterward that he will be relaunching the verification subscription services on November 29.
However, on Monday, the social media platform delayed its relaunch until such a time that there is high confidence that the system will solve the impersonation problem. The new verification subscription service is expected to help Twitter increase its revenue.
Twitter is Facing Turmoil as Companies Pause Advertising on the Platform
The company is currently experiencing turmoil as several companies such as General Motors and United Airlines paused advertising on the platform.
After a massive layoff that cuts half of the platform's workforce, there was also a mass exodus of workers from the company. Hundreds of employees resigned in response to Musk's demands of an "extremely hardcore" work culture to attain "Twitter 2.0."
Meanwhile, Twitter's CEO has been reinstating banned accounts on the platform.
The billionaire has also used Twitter to survey users as to whether the platform should offer a general amnesty to suspended accounts, as long as they have not broken the law or engaged in spam activities.
In fact, former US president Donald Trump's account was reinstated last week. Trump has been accused of spreading COVID-19 misinformation. His account was suspended for incitement of insurrection over the 2021 US Capitol attack.
