'My Hero Academia' Will Get a Live Adaptation Movie Produced by Netflix

It seems that Netflix is taking another shot at a live adaptation of an anime series. They will be producing the "My Hero Academia" movie alongside Legendary Entertainment. It will be produced by Shinsuke Sato, who is known for other works like "Alice in Borderland" and "Bleach."

What to Expect?

The screenplay will be written by Joby Harold, who is also the Executive producer of "Obi-Wan Kenobi" and "John Wick: Chapter 3 - Parabellum." With a lot of big titles associated with the people who aim to create the movie, expectations might be a little high.

So far, there is still no news about casting or an approximate date for release, but the movie is already four years in the works, as mentioned by Engadget. Although it will be produced by Netflix, it will be distributed in Japanese theaters.

Since the show already has a huge fanbase due to the manga and the anime series, the movie has a chance to be a huge success. Then again, there have already been anime adaptations with a huge fanbase that still flopped.

No one has forgotten the "Dragonball: Evolution" movie until now. The anime it was adapted from is a huge success, yet the movie received such negative reviews. There was also the adaptation of "Death Note" in 2017, and that did not fare well too.

The two live adaptations previously mentioned partly disappointed fans because they did not stay true to the source material. That, and the casting was not as accurate, which is a sore spot for some fans (enter "The Little Mermaid" live-action movie fiasco).

If they manage to pull it off without making too many fans mad since it's rare to actually make all viewers happy, the live-action movie could be a big hit. With the manga having 65 million sales and the anime series continuously gaining popularity, they already have a good foundation.

The Premise

The show is about the protagonist, Izuku Midoriya. In a world where most humans have superpowers or "quirks," he does not. He aims to attend UA Academy which is a school for novice heroes after he inherits the powers of a famous superhero called All Might, as mentioned in Kotaku.

Adaptations to Come

Netflix is just stepping on the pedal now when it comes to live-action adaptations. Before people will get to see the "My Hero Academia" movie, they will first catch a glimpse of the live-action "One Piece" series which is almost done.

To assuage some of the anxiety from previous adaptations, the series is being watched closely by its creator, Eiichiro Oda. However, it doesn't stop there. In the near future, Netflix will be giving "Death Note" another go, according to Epic Stream.

It will be produced by both Netflix and Upside Down Pictures. If you're not familiar with the latter, maybe you'll recognize the people running it, which are the Duffer Brothers. They're most known for their work in "Stranger Things," which has gained so much success. So, fingers crossed.
