Abusive comments on YouTube have been a constant problem for content creators. To address this, the video streaming platform says it will send a notification to users who post abusive comments.
The platform removes abusive comments that violate the platform's rules. If a user keeps on posting abusive comments after receiving the notification, YouTube will ban them from posting further comments for the next 24 hours.
According to the company, they tested the feature out and learned that notifications and timeouts proved to be materially successful.
YouTube's Move Aims to Lessen the Volume of Comment Spam
According to The Verge, YouTube announced that it would start to issue warnings to users when they are spotted violating the company's guidelines. This is according to a post signed by "Rob" at TeamYouTube.
Popular creators have been increasingly drawing awareness to the growing number of comment spam on the video streaming platform. With this move from YouTube, together with other updates, the volume of comment spam could be reduced.
This year, creators such as Linus Tech Tips, Jacksepticeye, and MKBHD have all made videos about comment spam.
While comment spam itself takes many different forms, the wave of copy-pasted comments is one of the most common that you will see. There are also comments impersonating big creators as well as scams for things like Robux.
In response to these problems about comment spam, YouTube has introduced a way to increase the strictness of its comment moderation.
Moreover, the video streaming platform is cracking down on the methods that let people impersonate creators. Now, to further protect streamers, the platform is adding a warning for spammers, too.
YouTube Plans to Include More Languages in its Comment Detection System
Currently, abusive comment detection is available for English-language comments only. However, in the future, the video streaming platform plans to include more languages.
According to YouTube, their aim is to protect creators from users who are trying to negatively impact the community through comments.
Likewise, they want to offer more transparency to users who may have had their comments removed due to policy violations. Similarly, it will help users understand the platform's Community Guidelines.
Users who think that their comment has been removed for the wrong reason can share their feedback. However, TechCrunch pointed out that YouTube didn't state that it would restore the comments after checking the feedback.
In a forum post, YouTube also said that it had improved its AI-powered detection systems. The company claimed that in the first half of 2022, it had removed 1.1 billion "spammy" comments.
In addition, the video streaming platform has also enhanced its system to better detect and remove bots in live chat videos.
YouTube, along with other social networks, has been able to lessen spam and abusive content partly by relying on automated detection.
However, abusers often use some techniques to trick the system. Sometimes they use different slang or misspell words. It becomes more problematic if the comment is in a non-English language as it becomes more difficult to detect hateful comments.
