The iPhone 14 is now a certified lifesaver.
Two people have reportedly been rescued in a canyon in California thanks to the iPhone 14's crash detection and emergency SOS via Satellite features revealing their position for rescuers to come to get them.
The iPhone 14 had these features along with other ones to safeguard their owners from fatal incidents and life-threatening situations.
iPhone 14 Rescue Details
The Special Enforcement Bureau of the Los Angeles Sherriff's Department (SEB-LASD) recently posted on its official Twitter account it had rescued two crash victims in the Angeles National Forest. The victims found that the car the victims were in fell over the side of a 300-foot drop into the remote Monkey Canyon, per MacRumors.
According to the SEB's post, one of the passengers' iPhone 14 registered the crash thanks to its new Crash Detection feature. However, it is unable to send a text message through the usual cellular signal.
Thankfully another new feature on the iPhone 14, its emergency SOS via satellite, kicked in. According to 9to5Mac, the iPhone 14 enabled Emergency SOS via satellite once it detected no cellular signal, letting it send a distress message over to Apple's new relay centers.
Once received, a relay center employee informed first responders from the SEB-LASD immediately.
This feature, according to Apple Insider, requires an open sky, of which the national park was abundant, and an action by its owner to send the message out. It relays its exact latitude and longitude data, allowing first responders and rescue teams to pinpoint the victims' location instantaneously.
This new feature also provides details about its owners' injuries, whether its owners are lost or trapped in an area, and what supplies they had left when the message was sent.
It would also include its owner's medical ID and location as part of its message.
First responders and rescue teams immediately lifted the crash victims out of the canyon with a helicopter once they arrived at the same. After which, the victims were brought to a local hospital, where they received treatment for mild to moderate injuries.
How To Use Emergency SOS Via Satellite On Your iPhone 14
Unfortunately, accidents as bad as what the SEB LASD responded to will happen to anyone sooner or later. As such, it is important to enable such safety features to prevent the worst effects of an accident from becoming life-threatening or even permanent.
To use this feature, iPhone 14 users are advised to first connect to a satellite to contact emergency services. After which, Apple advises people trying to text emergency services to:
- Tap Emergency Text via Satelite and then Tap "Report Emergency"
- The user would then answer a simple questionnaire pertaining to their situation. These answers will be sent along with their location.
- Choose to notify emergency contacts to let them know of their situation.
- Follow the on-screen instructions to connect to a satellite and contact emergency services. After which, the iPhone will automatically start a text conversation with emergency responders.
