Google Integrates Matter On Nest And Android Devices

Google has just announced that a selection of Google Products are now Matter-enabled, including Google Nest and Android devices.

According to the company, this new feature will make it easier for users to customize their smartphones and other homebrands.

Nest Devices Are Now Matter-Enabled

The Matter smart home standard's integration on Google lays the groundwork for the company to continue fulfilling its promises of interoperability, simplicity, and security.

The Connectivity Standards Alliance, which includes hundreds of other businesses, worked with Samsung, Amazon, Google, Apple, and others to develop the smart home interoperability standard known as Matter.

According to Android Authority, Matter aims to address the connectivity issues that the wide range of smart home products currently available on the market present.

The goal is to make it simpler for consumers to buy any brand of smart home appliance they choose and have it function properly with the rest of their smart home ecosystem.

With that said, Google has recently updated billions of Android smartphones and tablets as well as millions of Google Nest smart displays, speakers, and WiFi routers to Matter.

The Nest devices that are now Matter-enabled include the following:

  • Google Home speaker (first-gen)

  • Google Home Mini

  • Nest Mini

  • Nest Audio

  • Nest Hub (first and second-gen)

  • Nest Hub Max

  • Nest Wifi Pro

Users will be able to seamlessly connect their Matter-enabled devices to their home network using Thread, a technology that enables long-distance connections, or WiFi, according to the company.

Google Is Enabling Matter On Android Devices

The Verge writes that through this update, Android users can pair Matter devices with Google Home using a device.

It is important to note that with Matter-enable Nest devices, the first product categories that will be compatible with it are smart plugs, switches, and bulbs, smart thermostats, motorized window shades, and smart locks.

To help you quickly add a new device to the Google Home app or other Matter-compatible apps like Samsung SmartThings, Fast Pair on Android is receiving Matter support as part of the update.

In addition to Apple and Samsung, Google is the third of the top four smart home platforms to make matter control available on its hardware and mobile phones.

According to The Verge, aside from improving Nest and Android devices with the Matter integration, Google will also bring Matter to iOS devices in 2023.

However, there is a little issue in the fact that despite the existence of Matter controllers, there are not many things to control with them yet.

In fact, as of Monday, there are only three known devices that are Matter-compatible, but with the recent announcement from Google, that number is expected to significantly grow.

It is important to note that the purpose of Matter is to make setting up and using smart home devices much simpler.

However, the talk of Matter integration might still be very confusing to those who have not been following it closely over the last three years.

Nevertheless, Google is continuing the fulfillment of a promise made in October that it will roll out Matter-based syncing to devices in the future.
