UK Minister Gillian Keegan's Twitter Account Gets Hacked, Promotes Crypto Using Elon Musk's Photo

UK Cabinet Minister Gillian Keegan has been observed responding to tweets and posting links to a variety of cryptocurrencies, including Bitcoin and Dogecoin, on Twitter.

The profile photo of the British education secretary's Twitter account was changed to one with Elon Musk, giving the account's hacking activity away.

The Chichester MP's Twitter Account Has Been Promoting Cryptocurrencies

All mentions to Keegan in her Twitter account were deleted by Monday after a spate of messages from the account on Sunday night suggested the security had been breached.

On Boxing Day, tweets advertising the cryptocurrency were made all through the evening and into the early morning from the account, The Argus writes.

Initially created as a joke in 2013, the cryptocurrency saw a huge increase in value earlier this year when the CEO pushed it by claiming it could be used to purchase Tesla products.

According to U Today, the hacker was promising users free Dogecoin (DOGE), Bitcoin (BTC), and Ethereum (ETH) as part of a "special giveaway for all our followers and the crypto community."

Sir Lindsay Hoyle, the speaker of the Commons, wrote to lawmakers last month to urge them to increase mobile phone security, The Guardian reports.

He suggested that this should be done by using multi-factor authentication, as well as updating software and erasing outdated texts.

"You may not feel able to do everything on this list, but the more you do the less likely your personal information and mobile phone will be compromised, or the less damaging the consequences if you are hacked," Hoyle claims.

This Is Not The First Time The Hacks Have Happened Since Musk's Take Over

This is not the first time that such an incident has occurred because in July, hackers accessed the British army's Twitter and YouTube accounts to advertise phony bitcoin giveaways.

Since taking over the company in October, the new Twitter chief has openly proclaimed his intention to cut down on spam and malicious content, but he has not been effective thus far.

However, massive layoffs at the corporation have sparked worries that it won't have enough people to do so, according to Sky News.

The warning followed reports that Russians had hacked Liz Truss' phone during the summer of 2016, while she was serving as foreign secretary and the front-runner for the Tory leadership.

During the summertime Tory leadership contest, agents thought to be working for Russian President Vladimir Putin allegedly hacked her personal phone and obtained information about conversations with significant foreign allies.

Because of this, Michael Gove, the Levelling Up Secretary, emphasized that the government takes such security concerns "very seriously."

Additionally, it was revealed last year that both Boris Johnson's and Dominic Raab's mobile numbers had been published online for a number of years.

In both instances, the data was available to the general public for much over a decade, Sky News details.
