2024 Apple Watch Ultra to Get Bigger Micro-LED Display

In September 2022, Apple released the Apple Watch Ultra. It's a high-end wearable device targeting athletes who do extreme sports. However, many customers have been choosing it because of its larger screen and better battery life.

Now, according to Haitong Intl Tech Research Analyst Jeff Pu, the premium wearable could possibly get a notable update in 2024. Apple plans to bring Micro-LED Technology to the device with an even larger display in the future.

2024 Apple Watch Ultra Will Adopt a Micro-LED Panel

According to a report seen by MacRumors, Pu said that the Apple Watch Ultra could potentially gain a larger 2.1-inch Micro-LED display.

This is up from the 1.93 inches on the current model. But as per 9to5Mac, it doesn't necessarily mean that the entire watch will actually get bigger. The news outlet says that Apple could simply reduce its bezels.

Meanwhile, the analyst claims that instead of an OLED display, the 2024 Apple Watch Ultra will likely adopt a Micro-LED panel. Micro LED, an alternative to OLED, can achieve an even higher brightness level and it comes with higher color accuracy.

Based on rumors circulating, Apple has been working to bring Micro LED displays to some of its products in the future.

However, as the technology is more advanced, it is still also considerably more expensive than OLED and Mini LED.

With this, Apple Watch Ultra is an ideal product to be the first device to have such a display panel because, after all, it was also Apple's first device to have an OLED display.

Unfortunately, Pu said that he is expecting Apple Watch sales to drop in 2023 because of the lack of significant upgrades. Customers, particularly those who are waiting for a more significant upgrade, might find the 2023 edition of the device rather boring.

But people seem to be willing to wait longer to buy the upcoming Apple Watch and they might benefit from some good new technology.

As of writing, it is still unclear if Apple will introduce a new Apple Watch Ultra later this year. Based on multiple reports, the company is still working on blood glucose levels and also blood pressure sensors for the Apple Watch.

2024 Apple Watch Ultra Could be More Expensive

The current Apple Watch Ultra is already considered big by some users. So, increasing the display size to 2.1 inches might be viewed as a constraint by some customers.

However, increasing the size of the device also brings a wide range of inherent benefits. First, a larger display means a bigger battery, which would result in an increased screen on time. In addition, it means a wider screen for the user to enjoy.

Moreover, an increase in physical dimensions will also mean that Apple will have sufficient room to incorporate more sensors, according to WCCFTech.

Micro-LED also allows for increased brightness, along with better power efficiency. However, the trade-off is increased manufacturing costs.

Considering the increased display and new technology, the next generation of Apple Watch Ultra could be really expensive.

If the 2024 Apple Watch Ultra switches to micro-LED, Apple could be forced to increase the $799 threshold of the device. This might affect overall sales.
