In a series of tweets, supply chain analyst Ming-Chi Kuo announced that Apple plans to release the first MacBook having an OLED display by the end of 2024.
Kuo explained in his tweets that if this would happen, it would allow for thinner and lighter MacBooks compared to the current units equipped with mini-LED, according to Apple Insider.
Three MacBook Models Will Transition to OLED Displays, Another Analyst Says
All existing MacBooks in the market have LCD panels. The latest 14-inch and 16-inch MacBook Pro feature mini-LED backlighting and ProMotion.
OLED displays have self-emitting pixels, unlike LCDs with mini-LEDs. Because of that, they do not require backlighting.
If future MacBooks will have OLED displays, they would have an even better contrast ratio. In addition, it would allow for longer battery life.
While Kuo did not say whether the OLED MacBook would arrive in Pro or Air model, display industry analyst Ross Young said last month that Apple is planning to introduce a new 13-inch MacBook Air with an OLED display next year, as per MacRumors.
Similarly, the Cupertino-based tech giant will also release new 11.1-inch and 13-inch iPad Pro models with OLED displays next year, according to Young.
Earlier in 2022, Young also said that all three devices of Apple would have "two-stack" OLED displays with two red, green, and blue emission layers. The said emission layers are for increased brightness and lower power consumption.
In addition, he also previously said that all three devices would support ProMotion with up to 120Hz refresh rate.
Young is known to be the CEO of Display Supply Chain Consultants (DSCC). Previously, he accurately predicted that the iPhone 13 Pro and MacBook Pro would feature ProMotion.
Similarly, his predictions that the sixth-generation iPad mini would be equipped with an 8.3-inch display, and the MacBook Air would have a slightly larger 13.6-inch display were accurate.
Because of this, Young is known to have a successful track record when it comes to Apple product rumors.

Future Macs and iPads Will Transition to OLED Displays
Currently, there are no Macs or iPads with OLED displays. The latest MacBook Air and iPad Pro models of Apple are equipped with LCDs.
Meanwhile, the 12.9-inch iPad Pro features mini-LED backlighting for increased brightness and an improved 1,000,000:1 contrast ratio.
When it comes to Promotion, the 2017 and newer iPad Pro models already feature ProMotion with a 24Hz to 120Hz refresh rate.
Meanwhile, ProMotion would be all new to the MacBook Air. In 2021, Apple added the said feature to the 14-inch and 16-inch MacBook Pro, also with a 24Hz to 120Hz range.
It seems that over the next few years Macs and iPads will eventually transition to OLED displays.
While the said devices are adopting OLED displays, the Apple Watch might start moving away from the technology.
Based on multiple reports, the Apple Watch Ultra that would be released in 2024 is set to swap its OLED displays with microLED displays.
MicroLED technology is known to offer higher brightness and improved contrast ratio compared to the available Apple Watch models in the market having OLED displays.
