Paramount+, a subscription video on-demand streaming service, follows other streamers like HBO and Netflix in removing shows to cut costs.
Paramount+ Shows To Be Axed
According to Engadget, among the list of shows to be axed is the recently produced "The Real World: Homecoming," which reunites casts of the original 1990s MTV reality series and ran for six episodes. Included in this removal is "The Twilight Zone," a television anthology series that aired for two seasons only. "Interrogation", a true crime drama which only had one season will also be canceled.
The ten-episode animated series titled "The Harper House," will likewise be axed, as well as the comedy "No Activity" nd the six-episode series "Coyote". To end the list, the dark comedy "Guilty Party," which ran for one season, will also be dropped.
The dismissal of shows follows a similar cancellation pattern from its sister company, Showtime, which Paramount will absorb later this year and call "Paramount+ With Showtime."
This merge is to be created in pursuit of being the definitive multi platform brand and the first to integrate streaming and linear content among providers. The company also aims to provide better offers to its deomestic and international audiences through this partnership.
Paramount Global, the parent company of Paramount+ hasn't announced whether the shows that will be removed will have other platforms to land on after.
Why Are Shows Being Canceled
Forbes claims that there are a number of reasons as to why your favorite shows are being canceled.
Usually, the main reason why shows are being dismissed is cost cutting. Because shows on streaming services must pay residuals to the cast and crew, the cost for the platforms can pile up. In addition, a big production for a huge audience can be beneficial, but a big and expensive production show for a small audience is not ideal. This is why the streaming services don't take further risk on shows that don't give them the ideal records.
In terms of attractiveness, it's also more important for streaming services to have and pay for shows that are popular and buzzy, hence driving more subscriptions. This is beneficial to them than shows that users may have mostly watched, but also has the ability lose its heat.
A more obvious reason could also be the nature of the shows. There are so called 'seasonal favorites' like horror movies which are only best to be kept around Halloween or holiday titles that are best to be shown around Christmas. After the holidays, seasonal shows will no longer be as appealing.
Despite the sad news, Paramount+ makes it up to the subscribers by adding shows that they can also potentially like. This February, some of its new shows include "40 Days and 40 Nights," "The Addams Family," "The April Fools," "Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem," "Hamlet," "My Fair Lady," and many more.
