A new image of the upcoming Nexus 5 has leaked and the smartphone is powered on, giving us a first look at Android 4.4 KitKat.
Google released Android 4.3 Jelly Bean in July and the rumor mill is kicking into overdrive in terms of the Android 4.4 KitKat grand debut. It's widely believed that we're only a few days away from not only seeing the candy bar-named Android OS, but also a new Nexus smartphone with KitKat on board.
TuttoAndroid has posted the clearest images of the upcoming Nexus 5 yer, showing the handset running Android 4.4 KitKat. The site has also provided some new details on what we can expect to see in Google's latest Android release. The images show a new lockscreen that is very similar to iOS, while the camera shortcut has been moved and placed in the lower right corner. The notification bar has also received a makeover. Gone are the blue icons for battery, signal strength, and time, the icons in KitKat are now transparent and will revert between black and white.
Digging further, the app drawer loses its black background and now displays your current wallpaper. Google has also removed the "Apps" and "Widgets" tabs and Google Play Store shortcut that used to appear at the top of the app drawer in previous versions of Android.
Moving on to the Nexus 5, the site says that the smartphone is slightly larger and heavier than its predecessor and will feature a soft rubber-type back. The handset's specs and design match up with previously-leaked information regarding the device.
The Nexus 5 is expected to feature a 5-inch 1080 x 1920 Full HD IPS display with a pixel density of 442 pixels per inch (ppi). It will reportedly be powered by a 2.3GHz quad-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 800 processor, have between 2GB to 4GB of RAM and launch as the first smartphone to run Android 4.4 KitKat.
The handset will include an 8-megapixel rear camera with optical image stabilization (OIS) and a 1.2-megapixel front-facing camera for video chat. The smartphone's wireless capabilities are expected to include a 4G LTE radio, Wi-Fi 802.11 a/b/g/n, Bluetooth 4.0, NFC, and GPS, and it will also sport wireless charging out of the box. It is expected to be offered in 16GB or 32GB internal storage configurations and use a 2,300mAh battery.
We'll have to wait for Google to make it all official, but it's practically confirmed that a new Nexus smartphone running Android 4.4 KitKat is just around the corner.
