Opera Web Browser To Feature AI Capabilities Soon — Is ChatGPT Included?

Opera is getting many new features courtesy of new AI chatbots and tools.

The popular web browser announced it is integrating AI-generated content (AIGC) services into its PC and mobile browsers to be ahead of browser innovation than its competitors.

Opera's announcement comes in the same week as Microsoft's, which states it will redesign Edge to add an "AI-powered copilot" to its browser soon.

Opera AIGC integration Details

Opera mentioned in its Feb. 10 announcement it is adding AIGC to its browser's sidebar to further augment users' browsing experience. Among these features that use AIGC is a new "Shorten" button in the address bar to generate short summaries of any webpage or article.

Article to Engadget's report, the Shorten button uses ChatGPT to summarize articles and webpages for Opera users, allowing people to read a condensed version of the article or webpage of their choice.

Jan Standel, Opera's vice president of marketing and communications, revealed to The Verge that Shorten will soon become available to users "very soon." Once it launches to all users, they'll see a new icon to the right of the address bar, which opens a sidebar where ChatGPT will provide a bulleted summary of the webpage they're looking at when tapped.

Shorten is not the only AIGC tool Opera is adding to its web browser. It is also working on other AI-powered features that are guaranteed to further improve users' web browsing experience with Opera. Unfortunately, the company didn't reveal much about these other features.

Regardless, Song Lin, Co-CEO of Opera, stated that it is now the time for browsers to "step up and become the gateway to an AI-powered web."

The Co-CEO mentioned that Opera finds the rise of Generative Intelligence as "the beginning of a new future" where consumer app developers like itself can build experiences on top of AI-based platforms. She also added that the company is excited to see the rapid lunch of developer programs for solutions like Google Bard to build and release new experiences in web browsing that seemed impossible to achieve in the past.

Krystian Kolondra, EVP of PC Browsers and Gaming at Opera, is of the same mind as Lin, with them saying that the company believes the rise of AI solutions heralds a new era of creativity on the Web.

Kolondra also says that Opera' AIGC features will allow users to tap into these AI solutions and bring out their full potential in the best possible way.

AIGC's Rise To Fame

Opera is the latest web browser to announce it is adding AIGC features to its web services. Microsoft previously announced its Bing web browser would use a more powerful language model than OpenAI's ChatGPT called the Prometheus model.

This model will help Bing come up with more relevant search results and make Bing safer.

On the other hand, Google recently announced its Google Bard AI model experiment with combines the world's knowledge with the power, intelligence, and creativity of its large language models, per Tech Crunch. This model can allegedly explain the discoveries of NASA's James Webb Space Telescope to a nine-year-old or even help them learn more about the best strikers in football and get drills to build their skills.
