Amazon Urges Employees to Return to The Office Thrice A Week Beginning May

CEO Andy Jassy issued a statement on Friday urging Amazon corporate employees to spend at least three days each week at work.

A hybrid work arrangement, according to Jassy, would "strengthen" Amazon's corporate culture and promote better employee collaboration, Engadget notes.

This Is Part Of The Company's Post Pandemic Plans

According to Jassy, the decision-making process was led by him and the S-team, a close-knit band of top executives from practically every division of Amazon's company.

The choice was made after it was established that doing so would enhance the workplace culture and employees' capacity to share knowledge and work together.

According to CNBC, it is important to note that Amazon is looking to implement the new rule starting May 1 across all of the company.

However, Jassy stated that there would be a few exceptions to the rule, like positions in customer support that allow for remote work.

"It's not simple to bring many thousands of employees back to our offices around the world, so we're going to give the teams that need to do that work some time to develop a plan," the CEO said.

He continues by saying that while the company is aware that things will not be great straight away, it will gradually get better as its real estate and facilities teams iron things out.

Amazon anticipates that its workplace design will eventually change to reflect the changing methods the business wants to operate.

Engadget says that the company announced shortly after the pandemic started that it anticipated staff members returning to work in October 2020.

However, as new waves of the coronavirus drove cities all over the world to lock down, the business continued to postpone that date.

Amazon's New Rule Follows Similar Implementations By Other Companies

Since the COVID-19 outbreak has subsided, several businesses have recently called their staff back to work either full time or several days per week.

In fact, Google and Apple have obliged some of its employees to come back to work, and Disney started requiring hybrid staff to work four days a week in January.

The timing of Amazon's announcement also coincides with Activision's confirmation that beginning in July, Blizzard employees will be required to work outside the office at least three days a week.

Similar to Blizzard, Amazon has experienced a large number of employees organizing in protest of the business's practices.

The first unionized Amazon workhouse was JFK8, a facility in Staten Island, which became famous after the majority of its employees decided to unionize last year.

The action was also taken after Amazon announced at the beginning of the year that it would let more than 18,000 workers go.

CNBC reports that in an effort to tighten its belt in the face of declining sales and a deteriorating outlook for the economy, Amazon is pushing for its staff to be in the office more regularly.

One advantage of returning to work, according to Jassy, is that employees will have more chances to develop and workshop ideas.

According to the CEO, unknown to many, some of the greatest ideas have come about as a result of collaborative efforts between real individuals.
