AT&T adding new member to camera-centric smartphone family with 16MP Samsung Galaxy S4 Zoom

AT&T will make another attempt at releasing a smartphone with a strong focus on its camera and imaging capabilities. An photo of the 16-megapixel Samsung Galaxy S4 Zoom has leaked.

Phablets have grown in popularity as more and more consumers are looking to carry one device that serves multiple purposes. Smartphones such as the Samsung Galaxy Note 3, Sony Xperia Z Ultra and upcoming HTC One Max have been designed to converge a smartphone and small tablet. A new convergence trend is upon us, the one between smartphone and high-end camera. AT&T is the only U.S. carrier showing increased interest in this area and will add a new member to this new category of phones. It will soon offer its second camera-centric smartphone with the Samsung Galaxy S4 Zoom.

AT&T was the exclusive U.S. carrier of the Nokia Lumia 1020 and launched the 41-megapixel smartphone in July. A few weeks prior to that, Samsung had announced its own camera-centric smartphone with the Galaxy S4 Zoom. The handset packs in a 16-megapixel camera with 10x optical zoom and is meant to converge your smartphone and camera. It looks like AT&T customers will soon have a choice between the Lumia 1020 and the Galaxy S4 Zoom.

Famous tipster evleaks is once again giving us the news before AT&T and Samsung. The tipster tweeted the above image, indicating the Galaxy S4 variant will be making its way to AT&T and will see a 2013 release.

The Samsung Galaxy S4 Zoom features a 4.3-inch 540 x 960 qHD Super AMOLED display and runs Android 4.2 with Samsung's TouchWiz Nature UX. It is powered by a 1.5GHz dual-core processor and 1.5GB of RAM. The Galaxy S4 Zoom ships with 8GB of internal storage and a microSD slot with support for up to 64GB microSD cards to increase storage.

Its camera capabilities include a 16-megapixel camera with 10x optical zoom, a Xenon flash optical image stabilization (OIS), and the capability to record Full HD 1080p video @30fps. The smartphone also includes a 1.9-megapixel front-facing camera. Its Wireless connectivity options consist of Wi-Fi 802.11 a/b/g/n, Bluetooth 4.0 LE (low engery), A-GPS, and NFC. Samsung ships the Galaxy S4 Zoom with a 2,330 mAh battery.

Just as Nokia added an enhanced camera application and settings to the Lumia 1020, Samsung has also done its part with the Galaxy S4 Zoom. Users will find tons of advanced features and settings to get the best picture possible.

For now it's just a leak, but we'll keep you posted when we hear any new information about the AT&T Samsung Galaxy S4 Zoom.
