Samsung is getting ready to launch two new smartphones in the U.S., as the Verizon Galaxy S4 Mini and a high-end flip phone have just passed through the FCC.
We recently told you that Verizon is set to carry the Samsung Galaxy S4 Mini thanks to a leaked image of the smartphone. We're getting closer to an official launch, as the FCC has just certified the handset.
The FCC documentation reveals the Verizon Galaxy S4 Mini's model number is SCH-1435. The smartphone looks like a miniature version of Samsung's flagship Galaxy S4 and will be a mid-range handset for users who don't want to carry the 5-inch flagship and don't need all of the bells and whistles packed into the Galaxy S4.
The Galaxy S4 Mini features a 4.3-inch 540 x 960 Super AMOLED display with a pixel density of 256 pixels per inch (ppi) and runs Android 4.2.2 Jelly Bean. The handset is powered by a 1.7GHz dual-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 400 processor and 1.5GB of RAM to provide a fast and fluid user experience. It has 8GB of internal storage and a microSD expansion slot that will allow users to add up to 64GB microSD cards for additional memory.
The smartphone is also packing an 8-megapixel rear camera with autofocus, LED flash, and 1080p HD video recording capabilities, as well as a 1.9-megapixel front facing camera for video chat. Its wireless connectivity options include a 4G LTE radio, Wi-Fi 802.11 a/b/g/n, Bluetooth 4.0, GPS, and NFC. Samsung has included a removable 1,900 mAh battery.
The second smartphone to pass through the FCC is an Android flip-phone that is packing some impressive high-end specs. The flip-phone has been designed for cell phone users who don't want to give up the convenience of this design, but want to step into the present with a flip-phone packing a powerful processor, 13-megapixel camera and more.
The FCC filing reveals that the handset will use two 3.7-inch WVGA Super AMOLED displays - one on the inside and another external display for when the device is closed. It will be powered by a 2.3GHz quad-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 800 processor and 2GB of RAM. It will ship with Android 4.3 Jelly Bean and a 13-megapixel rear camera, as well as a 2-megapixel front-facing shooter.
Unlike the Galaxy S4 Mini being certified for Verizon, it's not clear to which carrier the Samsung flip-phone (which is going by the model number SM-W2014) will be headed. We'll keep you posted when we get more information.
